Classic Who - Season 11 Story 74 - Planet of the Spiders

A talking rubber spider?  Seriously?

====================================
Quotes
====================================
"Here's a funny thing. Here's a funny thing. When Archimedes, you've heard of Archimedes, jumped out of his bath and ran down the road without his clothes on, he didn't shout Eureka, he shouted I'm a streaker!" ~ Comedian

Brigadier: [of a belly dancer] Very fit, that girl. Extraordinary muscular control. Must adapt some of those movements as exercises for the men.
The 3rd Doctor: They'd take some adapting!

"You see, Professor, my particular field covers, er, psycholotry, telepathy and clairvoyance as well, so I thought perhaps you might be able to help me." ~ The Third Doctor

"Oh. It's happening more and more. I don't want it to! I was quite happy as a performer, Doctor, but I seem to be developing this, this power! Oh, I hate it. I hate it. The things I can make happen." ~ Professor Clegg

"Not only a journalist, but a woman journalist. We do not want her here." ~ Lupton

"A couple of refugee Tibetan monks setting up a lamasery in darkest mummerset? Okay, so maybe meditation's the in-thing. Maybe I can sell it to Percy. I still want to know what it's all about. Look, you'd better start at the beginning. I mean, what are you doing here anyway?" ~ Sarah Jane Smith

Mike Yates: But couldn't that be dangerous? If these, these powers were used wrongly.
Cho-je It could be so, yes. By evil men in their ignorance and craving, it could indeed be most dangerous.  Such a thing could never happen here.

"Doctor, I. Ah, doing a bit of hairdressing on the side, eh?" ~ Sergeant Benton

"This has come a long way.  From beyond the stars. Could it be a meteorite? Oh, it's beautiful. A gemstone. A blue jewel." ~  Professor Clegg

"The fiendish cunning of the man." ~ Sarah Jane Smith

"A shameless display of feminine wiles. Come on." ~ Mike Yates

"The crystal...I can feel it...concentrate on it. Concentrate!  It is why I have come.  To find the crystal and get it back.  It will give us power.  The power we both seek. Concentrate!" ~ Eight Legs

The 3rd Doctor: You know, I've always said that next to Mrs Samuel Pepys you make the finest cup of coffee in the world.
Benton: Thank you very much, Doctor. Actually the secret of it is, is to get the water...
Brigadier: Yeah. Look, never mind the dratted coffee. What about the spiders?

"You know Brigadier, when I was a young man, there was an old hermit that lived half way up a mountain, just behind our house.  I spent some of the finest hours of my life with that old man.  It was from him that I first learnt how to look into my mind." ~ The Third Doctor

"Oh, I brought it back some time ago from a planet called Metebelis Three. It's also called the blue planet because the moonlight is blue, you see?" ~ The Third Doctor

"But there aren't any giant spiders on Metebelis Three. At least, there weren't any when I was there." ~ The Third Doctor

"You know, this is barmy. Here we are calmly discussing fabulous planets with blue moons, giant spiders, magic crystals as if I was talking about umm pussycats, fish and chips and the Liverpool docks." ~ Sarah Jane Smith

"Panda Three to control. I've just spotted a silver hovercraft being chased by an old crock at ninety miles an hour, and there's a little tiny helicopter after them both! I'm in pursuit. Over." ~ Policeman

"Doctor, we're flying!" ~ Sarah Jane Smith

"Panda Three to control. You'll never believe this, Sergeant, but. Oh, nothing to report, over. I'm coming in. I don't feel very well. Over." ~ Policeman

"More power than you dared to dream of. Veil your mind! You must cloak your ambition. I can understand it, perhaps I share it, but if my sisters on Metebelis Three were to have an inkling of your thoughts, they would kill you. Beware! They seek to make the link." ~ Eight-Legs

"We could use him in the great work, the conquest of Earth. This is the secret purpose of the Great One. That is why she requires the crystal. We shall return to our rightful home, Earth, as rulers." ~ Spider Queen

"As we both know, such things are child's play to a master of sorcerer, but you cannot believe that Mister Lupton is a sorcerer. We have no magicians here, I do assure you." ~ Cho-je

"I like her arrogance no more than you do. You seek power on Earth. I shall seize it on Metebelis. We can help each other. Turn around." ~ Eight-Legs

"It is good that we have come to the west. You whip your poor horse too much. He gallops so that he is exhausted and yet, you know, he never leaves his stable." ~ Cho-je

"Perhaps you've gone mad, hearing voices, talking to yourself. Perhaps I've gone mad too." ~ Barnes

"Well, the Tardis may be a little erratic, I'll admit. After all, she is getting on a bit. But Metebelis Three is the one planet I can be absolutely certain of reaching. You see, I wired the coordinates into the programmer." ~ The Third Doctor

"So shall perish all two legs who would dare to question our power." ~ Spider Queen

"You were followed to Metebelis by two Earth spies. The male is dead, but the female lives, a danger to the state and our person. I suggest, sisters, that until she has been captured, we refuse to listen to these, these traitors. Do you agree?" ~ Spider Queen

"Well, well, well. Our clever young female journalist. You are keen to get your story, aren't you? What a pity it will never be published." ~ Lupton

"Wakey, wakey! Rise and shine! Show a leg, the weather's fine." ~ The Third Doctor

"Why should the blue crystal be the only mineral on Metebelis Three with an unusual structure? Now I'm looking for a stone that will absorb the energy of the spider's attacks. Oh, I do beg your pardon. The eight legs' attacks." ~ The Third Doctor

"Doctor! You're alive! I knew you'd come! Oh, Doctor!" ~ Sarah Jane Smith

"Why should I deny it? I know where the crystal is hidden. I told you, but I didn't say it was hidden on Metebelis. The situation is unchanged. If you wish to invade Earth, you need my help." ~ Lupton

"Now I know what a fly feels like. An absolutely fascinating experience." ~ The Third Doctor, on being held captive in a giant cobweb

The 3rd Doctor: Yes. Yes, make a good item on the next agenda of the spider council meeting. Whether to stew a Time Lord or roast him in a slow oven.
Sarah: That'll give them something to chew over.
The 3rd Doctor: Yes, something they can really get their teeth into, what?

"You bet, Doctor. I'll do my best to give them all indigestion." ~ Sarah Jane Smith

"Compress the muscles. It's a little, a little trick I learned from an old friend of mine. Harry, er, what was his name? Er, Hopkins. No, no, that's not right. Er, Hetherington. No, that's not right either. It wasn't an English name. Er, Hackenschmidt. No, I know it began with an H.  Houdini. Yes, that was it. Harry Houdini. Oh, don't worry, old chap. As soon as I've rescued Sarah, I'll find a knife and come back for you." ~ The Third Doctor

"Oh, but it is. You took the one last perfect crystal of power. I searched all time and all space for it. I must have it!" ~ The Great One

"Is that fear I can feel in your mind? You are not accustomed to fear, are you Doctor? You are very wise to be afraid of me!" ~ The Great One

"You are the most misguided of men. Did I not warn you? Did I not tell you of the risks you ran?" ~ cho-je

The 3rd Doctor: The key! I've lost the key!
Sarah: I've got it.

Sarah: But, Tommy, you're normal. You're just like everybody else.
Tommy: I sincerely hope not.

"Your friend knows not only our language but also our customs. The ceremonial gift merely symbolises friendship. We have no need for symbols, you and I." ~ K'anpo

The 3rd Doctor: No, sir, never. Once they get a hold of that crystal, nothing can stop them taking over the Earth.
Sarah: Or even the universe itself.

"We are all apt to surrender ourselves to domination. Even the strongest of us." ~ K'anpo

"Oh no, Sarah, no. No, he's talking about my greed. my greed for knowledge, for information. He's saying that all this is basically my fault. If I hadn't taken the crystal in the first place..." ~ The Third Doctor

"I wouldn't have chosen your alternative. To borrow a Tardis was a little naughty, to say the least." ~ K'anpo

"I will not be silent. I've listened to you for too long. To think that I've lost my chance of power through a spider! A spider that I could crush underfoot, without a second thought. A spider!" ~ Lupton

"You think I care for the puny plans of my subjects? Earth? One paltry planet among millions? Give me the crystal. I thirst for it! I ache for it!" ~ The Great One

"A tear, Sarah Jane? No, no, don't cry. While there's life, there's..." ~ The Third Doctor

"All the cells of his body have been devastated by the Metebelis crystals, but you forget, he is a Time Lord. I will give the process a little push and the cells will regenerate. He will become a new man." ~ K'Anpo

====================================
Trivia
====================================
This is the first time the term "regeneration" is mentioned on screen. Tom Baker is uncredited in the conclusion of Planet of the Spiders, when Jon Pertwee transforms into Tom Baker. Since no regeneration was shown at the end of The War Games, this marked the first time since William Hartnell changed into Patrick Troughton in 1966's The Tenth Planet that an on-screen hand-over of the role had occurred. Significantly, therefore, it was the first end-of-season regeneration to show the incoming actor.

This is the first time we see someone other than the Doctor regenerate (K'anpo Rimpoche). K'anpo Rimpoche regenerates from a Caucasian to an Asian (character, not actor). The next time a regeneration would change the individual's ethnicity (on screen) would be in Let's Kill Hitler.

This story features a large chase scene including: Bessie, the Whomobile, a police car, a gyrocopter, a hovercraft and a boat.

Parts of this story were recorded at the same time as parts of Robot. This not only meant that Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker were literally playing the Doctor at the same time, but also that Elisabeth Sladen — and to a lesser extent, Nicholas Courtney and John Levene — were having to rush back and forth between the two productions.

The Time Beetle featured in Turn Left shares some similarities with the Eight Legs: it too is a giant-sized insectoid that can latch onto a victim's back, becoming invisible to disguise its presence at the same time.

Jo Grant sends the Doctor a package containing the blue Metebelis crystal which the spiders covet, making this serial a sequel of sorts to The Green Death. This is also one of the first times - possibly the first - that a past companion has played a role in a later story, although Jo does not actually appear in the story (she does, however, appear in the novelization).

Purchase at Amazon.com Stevens: Money for all of us! More jobs, more housing, more cars!
Prof. Jones: More muck! More devastation! More death!

"Well, this is the space time coordinate programmer. The wretched thing's nearly worn out. That's the trouble with the Tardis. She's getting on a bit, you know, Jo." ~ The Third Doctor

"You haven't been listening, have you? Honestly, Doctor, you never listen to a word I say!" ~ Jo Grant

"But Doctor it is exactly your cup of tea. This fellow is bright green, apparently, and dead." ~ Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart

"No! No, look it's time to call a halt! It's time that the world awoke to the alarm bell of pollution instead of sliding down the slippery slopes of, of, of, whatever it is." ~ Jo Grant

"Jo, you've got all the time in the world, and all the space. I'm offering them to you." ~ The Third Doctor

"Well, now, what. Shut the blasted door! Of all the silly young goats. Can't you read? It said on the door to watch it, didn't it?" ~ Professor Jones

"But it's still using up the oil and doubling the atmospheric pollution. No, the world has got to find ways of using the energy the sun is giving us now. Well, like using the movement of the wind and the tides and the rivers. Well, I mean, like here at the Nuthutch. Well, you are quite warm? Heat from the river. And the heat pump works on electricity generated by a windmill. Alternative technology, see." ~ Professor Jones

"Nobody must go down the mine. Hinks. Nobody must go down the mine. Nobody." ~ Stevens

Fell: It was too late to save the miner. He was already dead, but this? Well, to leave them trapped down there, it's, well, it's murder!
Stevens: Don't be ridiculous man. They'll never have survived a fall like that. I just need a little more time, that's all. That mine must not be investigated. You know that as well as I do.

"I found it on the floor. It had been removed from the brake linkage. This was no accident, Mister Davies. This was deliberate sabotage." ~ The Third Doctor

The 3rd Doctor: Is it, indeed? I hadn't realised. I've been wanting to meet you for a long time. Your paper on DNA synthesis was quite remarkable for your age.
Prof. Jones: A promising youngster, huh?
The 3rd Doctor: No, no, no, I mean for the age that you live in.

"Oh, never fear, Blodwyn, Bert is here! Come on." ~ Bert

"Venusian akido, gentlemen. I do hope I haven't hurt you." ~ The Third Doctor

"Doctor, it's not that I'm afraid, exactly, it's just, it's just those maggots." ~ Jo Grant

"Mister Stevens, two of my friends are still down there in that mine in the gravest danger. If I consider it necessary to close Global Chemicals, then closed it will be!" ~ Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart

"Well, the moral of story, of course, is never trust a Venusian shanghorn with a perigosto stick." ~ The Third Doctor

"You shouldn't feel ashamed of your grief. It's right to grieve. Your Bert, he was unique. In the whole history of the world, there's never been anybody just like Bert. And they'll never be another, even if the world lasts for a hundred million centuries." ~ Professor Jones

"Orders? What do you mean, orders? I suppose if your officer gave you orders to kick the Prince of Wales, old Callow, up his royal britches, you'd do it, I suppose, would you? What about Miss Cartwright's ginger cat, eh? At death's door, he is, poor devil, not to mention Tom the sea captain." ~ Milkman

Jo: Look, I'm sorry, I know I'm a cloth-head, but...
Jones: That's all right, love. It's not your fault.

"Please, Doctor. There is no point in going on like this. You have convinced me that you are an arrant sensation monger, a political hothead and a scientific charlatan. Giant maggots indeed!" ~ Stevens

"Oh, don't apologise, my little superman. Just be sure next time. The day is coming fast. D-day. Der Tag. Nothing must be allowed to stop it. Nothing." ~ The Boss

"I don't understand you lot. Seems to me the problem's solved. We'll see no more of those creepy-crawlies, you mark my words." ~ Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart

"Well, I never thought I'd fire in anger at a dratted caterpillar, but..." ~ Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart

"You clumsy young goat. You've ruined the lot. All wasted. Dried fungus. My hybrid. I'll have to do the whole lot again. No, leave it! I shudder to think what might happen." ~ Professor Jones

Jo: Okay. Well, what shall I do?
Prof.Jones: Keep me company? Make some coffee?
Jo: Like a dutiful tea girl?
Prof.Jones: Right.
Jo: In a frilly cap and an apron?
Prof.Jones: Perfect.
Jo: Would you like a nice cup of arsenic?
Prof.Jones: Fine, fine, whatever you've got.

"Gone to get you a maggot. Silly young fool. She'll get herself killed!" ~ Professor Jones

"Oh really, Doctor. As far as I can gather from your computer record at UNIT, the difficult thing is to stop you talking. No, no, no, you won't provoke me so easily." ~ The Boss

"Today Llanfairfach, tomorrow the world, eh? A machine. A megalomaniac machine, but still a machine!" ~ The Third Doctor

"Oh, you are mistaken. I can't be wrong. I am infallible." ~ The Boss

Stevens: Freedom from fear, freedom from pain.
The 3rd Doctor: Freedom from freedom.

"Hello? Is that you, Sergeant? It's Jo. Look, I'm up on the slag heap with the Professor. He's hurt and we're surrounded by maggots. Please hurry." ~ Jo Grant

"Doctor, it's working. I say again, it's working. They're dying like, well, like maggots. We've licked them!" ~ Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart

The 3rd Doctor: Careful, Sergeant. What a beautiful creature.
Benton: (sarcastic) Oh yes, Doctor, beautiful.

"Stevens, you know, we should have arranged for a symphony orchestra to herald my triumph. To take over the world, to sweep into power on the crest of a wave of Wagnerian sound! You like that idea, of course? No? Oh, er, the 1812, perhaps? Or would we dare the glorious ninth?" ~ The Boss

"Stevens, listen to me. You've seen where this efficiency of yours leads. Wholesale pollution of the countryside. Devilish creatures spawned by the filthy by-products of your technology. Men walking around like brainless vegetables. Death. Disease. Destruction." ~ The Third Doctor

"Reverse pulse. Tan, tan tara. Loss of control. Stevens. Integrate booster function. Please. Please. We've been such good friends. Stevens, Stevens, please, please. Argh, it hurts! The pain! My circuits are on fire! No! Who would have thought it would come to this? Stevens, Stevens, my friend. My sentimental friend." ~ The Boss

Jones: Well, very soon now. We'll just stop off in Cardiff, pick up our supplies, get married and
Jo: Married?
Jones: Aye.

====================================
Trivia
====================================
This is Katy Manning's final story. However, she would reprise her role thirty-seven years later in the Death of the Doctor (Sarah Jane, Season 4). In that episode, she shows disappointment that the Doctor is now traveling with a married couple in the TARDIS, saying that she only left the Doctor because she got married, suggesting that she would have continued to travel with the Doctor if he had allowed her to bring Professor Jones. Stewart Bevan (who plays Cliff Jones, Jo Grant's 'love interest') was Katy Manning's boyfriend at the time of shooting.

The Brigadier takes a phone call from the Prime Minister, who is named as 'Jeremy'. This was a joke by the production team intended to suggest that the Liberal Party, then led by Jeremy Thorpe, could win the next General Election; Thorpe, of course, was never Prime Minister.

Some of the giant maggots were created from inflated condoms.

The consequences of the Doctor's journey to Metebelis III are followed up in Planet of the Spiders.

Classic Who - Season 11, Story 73 - The Monster of Peladon

====================================
Quotes
====================================
"It's the spirit of Aggedor! We took the sonic lance down into the mine as you ordered, and the spirit of Aggedor appeared and slew one of us for blasphemy! Who do you think's going to use your alien equipment now?" ~ Ettis

"Oh no, it isn't, is it, Doctor.  It's not your precious Citadel at all. It's another rotten gloomy old tunnel." ~ Sarah Jane Smith

"There are alien spies in the tunnels. Enemies of the Federation and of Peladon. They must be found and destroyed." ~ Ortron

"It's not that, Doctor. I think we're about to have some trouble of our own." ~ Sarah Jane Smith

"You really are a suspicious fellow, aren't you?" ~ The Third Doctor

"We shall not learn the Doctor's plans by having him executed, Ortron. If he is our enemy, he will soon betray himself." ~ Thalira

"Yes, well, if you hadn't missed the target by about five hundred yards and fifty years, we wouldn't be in this mess." ~ Sarah Jane Smith

"Look, it's fifty years now since Peladon joined the Galactic Federation, and what have the miners got to show for it? Harder work for the same rewards." ~ The Third Doctor

"I believe that human beings sometimes find the appearance of my species rather frightening. Yet I assure you, we are an amiable and peace loving race." ~ Alpha Centuri

"Your Majesty, as you know, the miners are already on the point of armed rebellion. How would they react if their leader was killed by the Queen's guards? He'd become a martyr, a figurehead for a people's revolution. Revolution and civil war, your Majesty, unless you allow me to help you." ~ The Third Doctor

Eckersley: I'll say one thing for your friend the Doctor, he's got quite a knack of talking himself out of trouble.
Sarah: Mmm, just as long as he hasn't talked himself into a whole lot more.

"These Earth females seem to have a distressing tendency to rash action." ~ Alpha Centuri

"Now, do you think it's just a coincidence that Aggedor appeared in that cave just as I started my investigations?" ~ The Third Doctor

"The Ambassador opened the door because Ettis threatened to kill me. Now you can't say that means I was helping him." ~ Sarah Jane Smith

"There's no need to trouble the Queen, Doctor. I shall deal with you myself. Here in the temple, my will is law. I shall consult the judgement of Aggedor. Oh, mighty Aggedor, make known they will. How shall we punish those who have offended against thee?" ~ Ortron

"The decision is no longer yours or mine, your Majesty. The girl and the Doctor have gone to face the judgement of Aggedor." ~ Ortron

"A little bit of light hypnosis. It brings out his sweeter nature, doesn't it, old chap, hmm? Come and tickle his ears, Sarah." ~ The Third Doctor

"Inform the Federation. Get them to send you a bit of muscle. With Federation troops on the planet, you and your friend the Doctor, could make both sides see reason. And besides, if things really do blow up on this planet, the Federation could lose the trisilicate, and then they'll want to know why they weren't told how bad things were getting, you see?" ~ Eckersley

"The Doctor and his companion have been most barbarously treated. The behaviour of our Chancellor was unforgivable. You appealed to the judgement of Aggedor. Now you shall accept it. The Doctor is vindicated." ~ Queen Thalira

"There's nothing only about being a girl, your Majesty. Never mind why they made you a Queen, the fact is you are the Queen, so just you jolly well let them know it." ~ Sarah Jane Smith

Sarah: No, no, it was before all that started. Now listen, whoever's faking Aggedor would need a lot of technological equipment, right?
The 3rd Doctor: Yes. And a very considerable power source too.
Sarah: Well, there's all of that in the refinery.

"Pompous old idiot." ~ Sarah Jane Smith

"I'd like you to take me to the Federation refinery. From what Sarah tells me, there's something singularly suspicious going on down there." ~ The Third Doctor

"Unfortunately, Federation troops, as a result of the recent violence, are about to land on this planet.  didn't send for them. I don't want them here any more than you do. But they're coming, and we cannot fight them. Now our only hope is to convince them that their presence here is not needed, and the way to do that, is to return the mines to working order. Now, I appeal to you for the sake of Peladon, go back to work. And when the Federation troops have gone, there'll be a fair hearing for all your complaints." ~ Ortron

"Natives of the planet Mars. Your friend, the Doctor, calls them Ice Warriors, but I thought they were still in orbit?" ~ Alpha Centuri

"Let us see what has emerged. You say that the miners have rebelled against their proper rulers. But Gebek here says that the nobles have cheated them of their rights. You say that the Doctor here is a spy and a saboteur. But the Ambassador says that he is an old and valued friend. (to Gebek) You say that your god appears to you because he is angry, but the Doctor here is sure that the appearances are caused by trickery." ~ Commander Azaxyr

"If we cannot have the trisilicate, then our space fleet will blast your hostile planet to dust." ~ Commander Azaxyr

"No, Sarah is absolutely right. Those two were in the refinery all the time.  Commander Azaxyr isn't acting on behalf of the Federation at all. He's up to something on his own." ~ The Third Doctor

"My dear Sarah, Azaxyr will kill me anyway as soon as he finds I'm no longer useful. It's just a question of my getting rid of him before he gets rid of me." ~ The Third Doctor

"We have a saying on Peladon. If you can't stand the heat, keep out of the mine." ~ Gebek

"It was Ettis. He stabbed me. He's gone mad. He's got the sonic lance in a cave on Mount Megeshra. He's going to blow up the Citadel." ~ Rima

"If you use that sonic lance, you'll be killing your own Queen and a lot of your own people. Now most of the Ice Warriors are in that mine. The Peladonians are fighting them, Ettis, soldiers and miners together, and they're winning!" ~ The Third Doctor

"I was defending the safety of the Citadel. The death of the Doctor was an unfortunate necessity. You would do well to accept the situation." ~ Commander Azaxyr

"I still can't believe it. I can't believe that he's dead. You see, he was the most alive person I ever met." ~ Sarah Jane Smith

"Let there be no more of this foolishness, your Majesty. You can see for yourself the results of defying the Ice Warriors. Guard her." ~ Commander Azaxyr

"Ambassador, look. Look, it's the Doctor! He's alive. He's alive after all! You stay here and keep sending that SOS call. I'm going to join him." ~ Sarah Jane Smith

"I'm afraid that it's Eckersley that has been summoning up Aggedor. And now he's using him to attack your miners." ~ The Third Doctor

"Can't you ever stay out of trouble?" ~ Sarah Jane Smith

"When my father signed treaties with the Federation, he could not have known it would lead to nothing but bloodshed. However, we must accept the consequences." ~ Queen Thalira

"Ah. Then you must know that I'm in complete control of Aggedor. So may I suggest that you give yourself up straight away?" ~ The Third Doctor

The Third Doctor: Sarah, get out of here straight away. Warn Gebek. They're probably waiting for him. I'll try and help out with Aggedor.
Sarah: Well, you can't mean to stay in here?
The Third Doctor: Oh, this sort of nonsense doesn't worry me. You know that.
Sarah: No, I can't leave you in here!
The Third Doctor: Sarah, please, go.

"I shall summon assistance. Help! Guards!" ~ Alpha Centuri

"Well, don't sound so aggrieved. Anybody would think you prefer me dead." ~ The Third Doctor

"Yeah, well, don't worry. I think I know a way we can track him down." ~ The Third Doctor

"Don't move, Eckersley. Oh, yes. Aggedor may be getting on a bit but he can still sniff out a trail. I'm sorry, old chap, but it's all over." ~ The Third Doctor

"There's nothing only about being a miner, your Majesty, anymore there was about being a girl." ~ Sarah Jane Smith

"You're sure you don't want to stay and take the job, Doctor? Civil service post with a pension. I mean, I'd hate to stand in the way of your career." ~ Sarah Jane Smith

====================================
Trivia
====================================
This is the last on-screen appearance of the Ice Warriors until the story "Cold War" aired in 2013, though they did reappear in various novels and audio dramas.

In an attempt to recapture the feel of The Curse of Peladon, the same director and designer were assigned to this story and many of the props that still existed (including the Alpha Centauri and Aggedor costumes) were re-used. The Ice Warrior costumes were all originally made for the 1960's episodes.

"Well, it would have saved me a few bruises if we'd shaken hands the first time we'd met. Hello, how do you do?" ~ The Third Doctor

"Well, the outer worlds are being ravaged by a disease. The colonists are dying in their thousands. Another ten million men, women and children will die unless we help them, and help them quickly. Every hour we're stuck here on this planet, the death toll's mounting." ~ Jill  Tarrant

"The Earth creatures are to be exterminated. Fire at my command. Total extermination. Fire, fire, fire!" ~ Dalek

"Well, well, well. Daleks without the power to kill. How does it feel?" ~ The Third Doctor

"Oh, he's scared of the wee salt-shakers. I saw his face when they came out of that ship." ~ Dan Galloway

"Several of the planets the Daleks have colonised are suffering from the same disease. They're dying in millions. Now they need that chemical just as badly as you do. That's why I think they'll cooperate." ~ The Third Doctor

"Exterminate! Exterminate! Exterminate!  Am losing control! Am losing control! Am loosing, am loosing, am losing control! Am losing control!" ~ Dalek

"Well, I'm not too sure myself, but neither of you is very popular. The Doctor attacked their High Priest. From what we can gather, that's about the worst crime you can commit on this planet." ~ Jill  Tarrant

"Because they're only half robot, Sarah. Inside each of those shells is a living, bubbling lump of hate." ~ The Third Doctor

Sarah: You've got an idea, haven't you?
The 3rd Doctor: Yes. And it's not one of my favourites. In fact I don't care for it at all.

"Next time you get an idea, keep it to yourself, will you." ~ Sarah Jane

"I just heard your wind effect gnashing its teeth." ~ Sarah Jane

"You're in a perfectly safe place here. You've got three different ways to run." ~ The Third Doctor

"That way leads to death." ~ Bellal

"All right. All right, all right, all right, all right. Just a moment, just a moment! I've just had a face to face confrontation with a rather nasty root. It obviously wasn't very fond of me but it positively hated the Dalek." ~ The Third Doctor

"I really must go on a diet one of these days. Give me your hand!" ~ The Third Doctor

"Exxilon had grown old before life had even begun on other planets. Our ancestors solved the mysteries of science, built craft that travelled through space. They were the supreme beings of the universe." ~ Bellal

"You say that your ancestors were travelling in space when other worlds were still primitive? Then they almost certainly visited Earth and taught the people there how to build." ~ The Third Doctor

"I want you to make Galloway and his friends understand they've got to get the parrinium aboard that ship and be ready for blast off the moment the power is restored. Now remember the Daleks will be fully powered too and they'll do everything they can to destroy the Earth ship." ~ The Third Doctor

"Well. Now that must be one of the seven hundred wonders of the universe." ~ The Third Doctor

"Tell me, have you ever tried Venusian hopscotch? No, it's a silly question. You wouldn't have done. Anyway, now's your chance to learn. I want you to do exactly what I do, all right?" ~ The Third Doctor

"Alert! Alert! Excessive electrical charge received!" ~ Dalek

"You will climb to the summit and place the explosives on the beacon. You will obey! You will be in range of my fire at all times." ~ Dalek

"Oh, yes. By passing these tests we've proved that we have an intelligence level that could be useful. We might have some knowledge or science that they could add to their databanks." ~ The Third Doctor

Bellal: Doctor, the city defies all attempts to destroy it. We can't end its power.
The 3rd Doctor: I think I know a way.

"Human female has escaped. I have failed! Female prisoner has escaped! I have failed! I have failed! Self destruct! I have failed! Destruct! I have failed! Destruct! Failed! Failed! Failed! I, I, I, I, I." ~ Dalek

"Psychological warfare. I'm trying to destroy the city's brain. Engineer what in human terms is called a nervous breakdown." ~ The Third Doctor

"Yes. I know the Daleks, and they'll cause the maximum havoc and destruction before they go.  It's their scorched planet policy." ~ The Third Doctor

"It's rather a pity, in a way. Now the universe is down to six hundred and ninety nine wonders." ~ The Third Doctor

Trivia
====================================
This story originally did not feature the Daleks. They were included because of Barry Letts' and Terrance Dicks' desire to cash in on the Daleks' popularity.

This story marks the first time the Daleks' weapons do not function on screen. The Daleks can modify their casings relatively quickly, replacing their energy weapons with slug-throwing rifles.

Michael Wisher, who supplies the Dalek voices in this story, would later portray Davros.

The planet of Exxilon is actually Hanson's Aggregates Sand Pit, in Dorset.

Quotes
====================================
Sarah: So where are we?
The 3rd Doctor: Somewhere in London.
Sarah: And when?
The 3rd Doctor: Well, when we left. Give or take a few weeks.
Sarah: It's not the nineteenth century or the twenty first?
The 3rd Doctor: My dear Sarah, you are perfectly safe. Now all we've got to do now is go and find a telephone and ring the Brigadier.

"That's a very unfair word, you know, because actually the Vandals were quite decent chaps." ~ The Third Doctor

Sarah: There's no bus.
The 3rd Doctor: There's no anything. No, nothing's moving. No bicycles, no pedestrians, no cars, nothing.
Sarah: Why?
The 3rd Doctor: Well, perhaps it's Sunday. Great Britain always closes on Sundays. Come on, I think we'd better walk.

Finch: And waiting for this mysterious scientific advisor of yours to turn up?
The Brigadier: That's right, sir.
Finch: Hmm. I suppose he'll just materialise out of thin air.
The Brigadier: Very probably.

Duffy: Names.
Sarah: Sarah Jane Smith.
Duffy: Name?
The 3rd Doctor: Doctor John Smith. No relation.
Duffy: Age?
Sarah: Twenty three.
Duffy: Age?
The 3rd Doctor: You'd never believe me.

The 3rd Doctor: How do you do, sir? I'm the Doctor.
Lodge: You've got nothing to be cheerful about. There's no judge and jury now, mate. Military law.
Sarah: But why?
Lodge: Where you been? Because of the monsters!

The 3rd Doctor: Sir, I am the scientific advisor to UNIT, and I demand to be put in immediate touch with Brigadier Lethbridge Stewart.
Shears: I suppose he's an old friend of yours?
The 3rd Doctor: Yes, as a matter of fact he is.
Shears: How very interesting. You've been found guilty of looting.

Sarah: That thing. What was it?
The 3rd Doctor: A Tyrannosaurus Rex. The largest and fiercest predator of all time.
Sarah: But, but those things died out millions of years ago.
The 3rd Doctor: Yes, sixty five million years ago, to be precise.

"Fascinating. Absolutely fascinating. That was a time eddy. For a moment there, time went backwards." ~ The Third Doctor

The Brigadier: Ah, well, that's where you come in, Doctor. So far we've absolutely no idea where they're coming from or come to that, where they go.
Sarah: Where they go?
The Brigadier: Yes, that's one of the few good things about the entire situation. According to my patrols, they seem to vanish. Just disappear. No one sees them come, no one sees them go.
Sarah: But things that size, where could they go?
The 3rd Doctor: Well, that's pretty obvious, isn't it, Sarah?
Sarah: Hmm?
The 3rd Doctor: Back where they came from, into the past.

"General, we need to study this creature, not shoot at it. How much do you think we'll learn from a dead dinosaur?" ~ The Third Doctor

The 3rd Doctor: Good grief! It's a Stegosaurus. What a splendid specimen. No, no, don't shoot. I want to take a good look at it.
The Brigadier: Be careful, Doctor!
The 3rd Doctor: Don't worry, Brigadier, it's a vegetarian.

The 3rd Doctor: The Brigadier and his men couldn't see what happened, sir. They were temporally affected by a time eddy.
Finch: A what?
The 3rd Doctor: Whenever a creature appears or disappears, the temporal displacement causes a localised distortion in time. Now as far as the people in the immediate vicinity were concerned, time literally runs backwards, so naturally, they'd have no recollection of what had occurred.
Finch: The man's mad. Temporal displacement. Time travel is impossible, we all know that.

Sarah: Can I help at all?
The 3rd Doctor: No.
Sarah: Oh, come on, Doctor. I'm supposed to be your assistant. There must be something I can do.
The 3rd Doctor: Well, there is.
Sarah: What?
The 3rd Doctor: Go away.

Benton: Sir, they've spotted one. Section twelve, power station. The Chief Engineer said if we don't remove it quickly, he'll have to switch off.
The 3rd Doctor: Any idea what kind it is?
Benton: Er, a pato-something.
The 3rd Doctor: Apatosaurus, commonly known as the brontosaurus. Large, placid and stupid. That's exactly what we need.

The 3rd Doctor: Mind you, that creature isn't what I wanted at all. What I really wanted was a brontosaurus.
The Brigadier: What's the difference?
The 3rd Doctor: The difference, Brigadier, is that the brontosaurus is a placid vegetarian, whereas the Tyrannosaurus is the largest and fiercest flesh eater ever known on your planet.

The 3rd Doctor: Oh, fascinating. The trouble is the Blinovitch limitation effect. If they could overcome that their problem's...
Sarah: I think someone has.
The 3rd Doctor: What, on this planet?
Sarah: This is the only one I've been able to check up on, Doctor.

The Brigadier: I am sorry, Miss Smith. This whole affair's under strict security black-out. You can take your photographs when the crisis is passed.
Sarah: Oh! When the crisis is passed, there won't be anything to photograph.

[Benton has some of the chains that were holding T Rex down. A link has been cut.]
Benton: We found this, sir. They were all like that. Cut clean through.
The 3rd Doctor: And this machine's been sabotaged. There's not a single reading.
The Brigadier: Dismissed! No, not you, Benton.

Benton: Well, she didn't want to rest. I got her some transport and she shot off somewhere.
The 3rd Doctor: Oh, where?
Benton: She wouldn't say. She said to tell you she'd gone out to play.
The 3rd Doctor: You know, sometimes that girl baffles me.

"You're mad. You're absolutely raving mad! Creating monsters in central London?" ~ Sarah Jane

Yates: I'd like to know what's been going on, sir.
Finch: I've no idea what you're talking about.
Yates: I agreed to sabotage the Doctor's apparatus and delay his experiment, but I didn't agree to murder.

The Brigadier: Project abandoned. No further action to be taken. See, Doctor?
The 3rd Doctor: You'll forgive me, Minister, if I prefer to believe the evidence of my own eyes.

The Brigadier: And what possible reason could the Minister have for being involved in the apparition of these monsters?
The 3rd Doctor: The monsters are a side-issue, Brigadier, a device to clear central London. No, some vast scheme is underway, I'm sure of it, and it's rapidly moving towards its climax.

The 3rd Doctor: Yes, well now that you've caught me, General, you can end the evacuation and return your eight million Londoners, can't you.
Finch: That decision doesn't rest with me. It rests with the Prime Minister. Captain Yates?
Yates: Sir?
Finch: Until further orders, you'll keep that man under close arrest. Come with me, Brigadier.

"Right then, Doctor, you'd better get busy. You'd better start overpowering me, hadn't you. You know, a bit of your Venusian oojah?" ~ Sgt. Benton

The Brigadier: Well, don't just stand there, Benton. Go and put yourself under arrest.
Sgt. Benton: Sir?

Bryson: Well, they're out on this big hunt, Miss, looking for the Doctor.
Sarah: The Doctor?
Bryson: Well, they had him arrested but he escaped. Well, he made the monsters.
Sarah: Don't be ridiculous.
Bryson: Well, they caught him red-handed.

"Soon the Doctor and his associates and everyone on this planet, except our chosen group, will never have existed. Shall we begin?" ~ Charles Grover M.P.

"Oh, boy. I really do choose my friends, don't I." ~ Sarah Jane

Finch: You realise this is mutiny?
The Brigadier: There's no question of mutiny, sir. I'm only doing my job.

The 3rd Doctor: Just what are they going to do, Mike?
Yates: They're going to roll back time. The world used to be a cleaner, simpler place. It's all become too complicated and corrupt.
The 3rd Doctor: Roll back time, I see. Can Whitaker really do that?
Yates: I believe so. All the preliminary experiments have been successful.
The 3rd Doctor: Do you realise what'll happen if they succeed?
Yates: We shall find ourselves in the golden age.

"Well, I never thought I'd find myself blowing up a tube station. If you're wrong, Doctor, I'm going to have a job explaining this to London Transport." ~ The Brigadier

Finch: You'll be court martialled for this, Sergeant!
Sgt. Benton: Yes, sir.  Very sorry, sir!

Whitaker: No! He's reversed the polarity!
[Whitaker and Grover fight over the lever.]
The 3rd Doctor: Keep back!
[Grover pulls the lever down again, and he and Whitaker and the console disappear.]
Sarah: Well, where've they gone?
The 3rd Doctor: Back to their golden age. And I hope they like it.

"But what about you? Oh no, don't tell me. You're a Time Lord." ~ Sarah Jane

The Brigadier: Come on, Benton.
Sgt. Benton: Still I'll say one thing. Not many Sergeants get the chance to punch a General on the nose.
The Brigadier: Just don't make a habit of it, Benton.

Trivia
====================================
The 625-line colour PAL transmission master videotapes for the serial were scheduled to be wiped and reused, but only Episode 1 was erased. The serial remained incomplete in the BBC Archives until 1983, when a monochrome print of Episode 1 was found and returned. Episode 1, broadcast in January 1974, was one of the latest Doctor Who episode to have been junked by the BBC (followed only by Episode 1 of Death to the Daleks, which aired a few months later).

This is the first story to feature the Doctor's car colloquially known as the Whomobile (though never actually named on screen).

This was the first Doctor Who story to be directed by a woman, namely Paddy Russell, since The Massacre of St Bartholomew's Eve in 1965, which was likewise directed by Russell.

At one point, Sarah states she is twenty-three. This would make the date of this story 1974.

From one point of view, Sarah is not really the Doctor's companion until the end of the story. She was merely on her way back to present day London after she stowed away in the TARDIS on its previous voyage. Indeed, she at least feigns discomfort at the idea of travelling in the TARDIS again. The Doctor's offer to take Sarah to Florana leads into the next story Death to the Daleks. This invitation, which included a long and vivid description of the wonders of Florana, prefigures a penchant of his ninth and tenth selves to describe a wonder of the universe in glorious detail to encourage a companion to stick around. (World War Three, Last of the Time Lords, The Sontaran Stratagem)

Sarah Jane Smith refers to the events of this episode in a conversation with Rose Tyler during School Reunion.

Producer Barry Letts has often stated that he was very disappointed with the quality of the model dinosaurs built for this serial. They were created not by the BBC Visual Effects Department but by a freelance effects designer.

Barry Letts wanted the dinosaurs at the end of this episode to be a surprise, so the title was shortened to "Invasion". As a result, when the BBC decided to purge most of the Second Doctor's adventures (one of which was titled "Invasion"), this one was also erased by mistake.

Quotes
====================================
"A warrior. A warrior from the stars! Have you come to challenge me, sky warrior?" ~ Irongron

"By virtue of my authority as an officer of the Army Space Corps, I hereby claim this planet, its moons and satellites, for the greater glory of the Sontaran Empire." ~ Linx

Brigadier: Well, I'd rather a bright idea. It's rather hard to keep an eye on all these scientist chaps at home, so I had these cubicles put up on several floors. Confined the whole lot to barracks. All my eggs in one basket, so to speak.
The 3rd Doctor: That's fine, so long as no one steals the basket.

"Well, my Aunt Lavinia is in America on a lecture tour, you see. She had an invitation to visit here. I took her place. Well, I thought all this might give me a good story. I'm a journalist. Sarah Jane Smith." ~ Sarah Jane

"This helmet conceals the fact that I am not to of your kind, Irongron. You might not find my true appearance pleasing." ~ Lynx

Irongron: Oh, so you like a war, eh?
Linx: Who does not? My race has been at war for millennia. There is not a galaxy in the universe which our space fleets have not subjugated. But you do not understand me. I am stranded on this primitive planet when I should be leading my squadron to glory. I am an expert at war, Irongron.

Sarah: What's happening?
The 3rd Doctor: You're asking questions again.

"Someone's operating a matter transmitter. And the really odd thing is, there's a time transference too. It's being worked from several centuries ago. Past and present mixed up. Very interesting, that." ~ The Third Doctor

"Brigadier, a straight line may be the shortest distance between two points, but it is by no means the most interesting." ~ The Third Doctor

"Well done, old girl. Absolutely on target. For once." ~ The Third Doctor

Sarah: Look, just pack this up, will you. It's not funny. I happen to be a reporter and I've got a big story...
Irongron: Take her away, Bloodaxe. Throw her in the dungeon.
Sarah: Why don't you take off that ridiculous gear and go home to your butcher's shop. Let go! Look, I warn you, any more of this and I'm going straight to the police.

"Aye, the wench is crazed right enough. A pity. She is not uncomely." ~ Irongron

"Ah, I understand. You have a primary and secondary reproductive cycle. It is an inefficient system, you should change it." ~ Lynx

"By heavens, Bloodaxe. 'Tis like a tin tadpole. You cut off its head and yet it wriggles. I'll have a word with Linx about this." ~ Irongron

"Only one thing matters. To complete the repairs to my ship and return to the glorious war that is my destiny. Nothing must interfere with that. Nothing, and nobody." ~ Lynx

"I'm sure the Doctor's the key to it all. He was there when one of the scientists was taken. He has a machine that can travel through time. Well, it must be him, and somehow we've got to stop him." ~ Sarah Jane

Linx: What is your native planet?
The 3rd Doctor: Gallifrey. I am a Time Lord.
Linx: Ah, yes. A race of great technical achievement, but lacking the morale to withstand a determined assault.

"Young girl? I should have thought he was a bit old for that sort of thing. Oh well." ~ Prof. Rubeish

"You've been getting around, Sarah. Are you on visiting terms with all the local nobility?" ~ The Third Doctor

"Because I never lie. Well, hardly ever." ~ The Third Doctor

"You know, I was never much of a hand with a paint brush myself.  No. Nor a palette knife for that matter. But I'd like to study under one of the masters one day. Rembrandt, preferably." ~ The Third Doctor

"Me? I'm a Time Lord. And my people are very keen to stamp out unlicensed time travel. You can look upon them as galactic ticket inspectors, if you like." ~ The Third Doctor

"Gas? Good heavens, what on Earth do you take me for? No, it was some sort of superior stink bomb with a few bangs and flashes thrown in for good measure. No, it's quite harmless, I assure you, but (sniff) phew." ~ The Third Doctor

Rubeish: Who is Irongron? Is he a nice chap?
The 3rd Doctor: Well, I wouldn't recommend him for the Royal Society.

"Now listen, all of you. You've been kidnapped, but you're about to be rescued. I hope. There's a machine here that'll send you home again. Unfortunately, I don't know how to work it, and the chap who does has vanished. But I expect he'll pop up again. He usually does. But the important thing is, until then, you must carry on working as if you were still hypnotised.  Oh, Morrison, don't start asking a lot of awkward questions. I assure you I don't know the answers any more than you do." ~ Rubeish

"Well done, Sarah. Just like a daring young man on the flying trapeze. Come on." ~ The Third Doctor

"Do you know, I think that was one of the most active days I've had in years. Well, it's not as if I was a lad anymore, once you're over two hundred..." ~ The Third Doctor

"Something's gone wrong. He must have hit the take off button too soon. Come on, we've got about a minute to get out of here. Quick, run!" ~ The Third Doctor

Hal: Goodbye. You are truly a great magician, Doctor.
The 3rd Doctor: To tell you the truth, Hal, I'm not a magician at all.
Sarah: I'm not so sure about that.

Trivia
====================================
"The Time Warrior" marks the first appearance of the Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith, arguably the most popular companion the Doctor has ever had.  Sladen is tied with Nicholas Courtney for the record of appearing with 7 on-screen incarnations of the Doctor.  She was a companion for both the third and the fourth Doctor, pluse she appeared in the Five Doctors with all of the first five Doctors in "The Five Doctors".  She later appeared with David Tennant and Matt Smith's Doctors in the the 2005 revival of Doctor Who, plus her own spin off show, The Sarah Jane Adventures.

Along with Peter Davison and John Leeson, she is one of only three actors to play the same character in both the classic series and the revival series.

"The Time Warrior" is also the first appearance of the Sontarans, in this serial Linx is played by Kevin Lindsay who would reprise his role the following season in The Sontaran Experiment shortly before his death.

This story is also the first time the Doctor mentions his home planet by name: Gallifrey. (Gallifrey was originally scripted as Galfrey.)  He refers to the Time Lords as "galactic ticket inspectors".

This story features the debut of a new opening and closing title sequence designed by Bernard Lodge and realised using a process known as 'slit scan'. The opening title sequence features for the first time the distinctive diamond-shaped logo for the series.

Working titles for "The Time Warrior" included The Time Fugitive and The Time Survivor.

It was script editor Terrance Dicks' choice for the setting of a medieval castle. Robert Holmes disliked the idea, stating he was a science fiction writer and not very good at history, but he followed Dick's instructions to pick up "The Boys Book of Castles" and write from that.

Holmes reversed the roles in giving Dicks the setting of a lighthouse for Horror of Fang Rock in 1977.

Peckforton Castle was used for both Wessex and Irongron's castles.

In Dicks' novelization of The Time Warrior, published by Target Books in June 1978. Linx's first name was revealed as Jingo, in the prologue.

Bob Hoskins was the first choice to play Irongron. He turned it down, but recommended David Daker.

Classic Who - Season 10, Story 68 - Planet of the Daleks

====================================
Quotes
====================================
"Telepathic circuits. Sending a message to the Time Lords. I must tell them to. I must, I..." ~ The Third Doctor

"There is no such place as Earth. It's just a name in our old legends. It doesn't really exist." ~ Vaber

"Skaro! Yes, of course, you're Thals!" ~ The Third Doctor

"In our legend, there is a being, a figure from another planet who came to Skaro when the Thals were in their greatest peril, in something called a Tardis." ~ Taron

The 3rd Doctor: You still don't trust me?
Taron: Why should I? You come here out of nowhere and then claim to be something out of a legend.

"No, don't do that. No, most Daleks have an automatic distress call. Even when they're deactivated, the transmitter may keep functioning." ~ The Third Doctor

"There's a considerable difference between courage and reckless stupidity, you know." ~ The Third Doctor

"Oh, I don't know. I think you're doing yourself rather an injustice there. If you hadn't acted the way you did, we'd have all been captured. They give medals for that sort of bravery." ~ The Third Doctor

"Courage isn't just a matter of not being frightened, you know.  It's being afraid and doing what you have to do anyway, just as you did." ~ The Third Doctor

"Daleks! Daleks here?" ~ Jo Grant

"No, that's hopeless. If there's one thing the Daleks are very good at making, that is locks." ~ The Third Doctor

"A tiny motor with an electric power source. That's it. Yes. Yes, I'll dismantle the circuitry, reverse the polarity and convert to a low power receiver transmitter with a positive feedback." ~ The Third Doctor

"It should give them quite a brainstorm. Give me your screwdriver." ~ The Third Doctor

"Do you know the strength of the Dalek force here? The signal we intercepted was to Dalek Supreme Command. It stated that the force assembled on Spiridon was now complete. It gave their numbers. Well, somewhere on this planet there are ten thousand Daleks!" ~ Rebec

"It's an allotrope of ice. Well, it's a form of ice that never gets hard. Codal is convinced that the core of this whole planet is a mass of it, because every once in a while the pressure builds up and the whole thing bursts to the surface.  but instead of white hot lava, this erupts with molten ice. We've seen it, tremendous explosions. The ice covers the jungle for miles around." ~ Taron

"You know, for a man who abhors violence, I must say I took great satisfaction in doing that." ~ The Third Doctor

"Never underestimate the Daleks, Codal. They won't let a little matter of a metal door delay them for long." ~ The Third Doctor

"When faced with the inevitable, don't waste precious time by resisting it." ~ The Third Doctor

"You know, after this, I think I must take up hot air ballooning. It really is most exhilarating." ~ The Third Doctor

"Look, Doctor, the last I'd heard about you, you'd been captured by the Daleks, right and I was told that they were going to take you because they're doing all these experiments and then I thought you were going to be in them and I didn't know what I was going to do..." ~ Jo Grant

"They've got an army based here, Jo, the mightiest army of Daleks there's ever been." ~ The Third Doctor

"Good, because the business of command is not for a machine, is it? The moment that we forget that we're dealing with people, then we're no better off than the machines that we came here to destroy. When we start acting and thinking like the Daleks, Taron, the battle is lost." ~ The Third Doctor

"You know, this planet never ceases to amaze me. First we find a gigantic refrigerator and now night storage heaters. It really sounds quite luxurious." ~ The Third Doctor

The 3rd Doctor: What? But that's the worse thing he could possibly do.
Rebec: But Codal said if we destroyed the refrigeration unit, we'd be destroying the Daleks.
The 3rd Doctor: On the contrary, you'd be bringing their army to life.

The 3rd Doctor: Well, first of all we've got to stop the Daleks releasing their bacteria. Second, we've got to make sure their army stays inactive, and third, we've got to generally put an end to their chances of invasion of other planets.
Jo: Well, how're we going to do all that?
The 3rd Doctor: I haven't the faintest idea.

"We cannot leave here. No one can enter. We can never leave here. Never, never, never!" ~ Dalek Section Leader

"He's right, you know. One bomb won't destroy them all. The most we can hope for is to stop that army getting into action." ~ The Third Doctor

"Message from command spacecraft. The Dalek Supreme will touch down in Spiridon shortly. He will assume total command of all operations on this planet." ~ Dalek

Latep: Just knowing might mean the difference between success and failure. We all thought that whatever happened, there was no way out. It was a suicide mission. That's affected everything we've done. We've faced dangers and taken risks because there was nothing to lose, Jo.
Jo: Would you go on taking them?
Latep: I don't know. You see, I've found a reason to be more careful, a reason for wanting to stay alive.

"When you get back to Skaro, you'll all be national heroes. Everybody will want to hear about your adventures. So be careful how you tell that story, will you? Don't glamorise it. Don't make war sound like an exciting and thrilling game.  Tell them about the members of your mission that will not be returning, like Maro and Vaber and Marat. Tell them about the fear, otherwise your people might relish the idea of war. We don't want that." ~ The Third Doctor

"Preparations will begin at once to free our army from the ice. We have been delayed, not defeated. The Daleks are never defeated!" ~ Dalek Supreme Command

====================================
Trivia
====================================
Originally, Episode 5 was to end with all of the Thal characters massacred by the Daleks. Terrance Dicks, however, asked that Terry Nation not include this plot point, as the series was beginning to be criticized for its violent content.

According to the DVD info text, it was decided at one point that all on-screen actors had to wear makeup, including the Dalek operators, who (it was feared) could conceivably be seen through the mesh of the props. The operators, in protest, one day dressed up their Daleks as women, and Michael Wisher and Roy Skelton, playing along with the joke, provided suitably "camp" voices for the dolled-up Daleks!

The original color version of Episode 3 is currently missing. A black & white print exists and was colorised by various methods for the DVD Boxset Dalek War.

The story has been recognized as a reworking of the first Dalek story, The Daleks, containing some of the same plot devices, including: a group of Daleks in a city encountering the Thals on a ravaged planet; a deadly plague instead of a neutron bomb; someone using a Dalek shell as a disguise; the Doctor imprisoned in a cell and with paralyzed legs; and the Daleks imprisoned in their city at the end of the story.

Because Terry Nation had not written for the show since 1965, he initially believed each episode was individually-titled. Among his episode titles were "Destinus", "Countdown to Eternity" and "Victory."

Daleks who survived this skirmish with the Doctor were later imprisoned in the Intensive Care Ward of the Dalek Asylum, where the Eleventh Doctor would later encounter them. (Asylum of the Daleks)

External shots were done at Beachfields Quarry, in Surrey.

Quotes
====================================
"Look, they steal a few of our cargoes, we steal a few of theirs. It'll all blow over." ~ Stewart

"Mysterious object sighted during hyperspace transition. Object resembled large box with flashing light on top. Object disappeared before collision. Present whereabouts unknown." ~ Hardy

"Only you could manage to have a traffic accident in space." ~ Jo Grant

"Nonsense, it's simply a man with a gun. Now pull yourself together." ~ The Third Doctor

"Many of our noblemen felt it was a mistake to make a treaty with the Earthmen. Perhaps they were right. You attack our ships and when we protest, you trick us with lies and evasions. I give you a final warning. The path you are treading leads only to war. And in that war, Draconia will destroy you!" ~ Draconian Prince

"I'm reversing the polarity of my ultrasonic screwdriver's power source, thereby converting it into an extremely powerful electromagnet." ~ The Third Doctor

"No, the Ogrons are mercenaries. Other life forms use them to do their dirty work." ~ The Third Doctor

Gardiner: Stewart? Who are you?
The 3rd Doctor: Passengers.
Gardiner: I see. Having a fancy dress party?

"Will you stop pacing up and down like a perishing panda. Now come and sit down. Let me think, will you?" ~ The Third Doctor

"Oh. Oh, well that's simple then. I mean, all we've got to do is find out what's going on, who's behind the Ogrons, where they've taken the Tardis, go and get it back and then we can all go home. Right? I don't know what I've been worrying about." ~ The Third Doctor

"Well, they're only sort of computers with a few extra knobs on. And you know how stupid computers can be, don't you? Now come and sit down, stop worrying. Come on. Sit down. Did I ever tell you the story about how I was once captured by the Medusoids?" ~ The Third Doctor

"Allow me to congratulate you, sir. You have the most totally closed mind that I've ever encountered." ~ The Third Doctor

Draconian Prince: General Williams hates out people. Once before, he caused war between us and the Earthmen. Now he plans to do so again.
Draconian Aide: Such a war would be madness since both empires would be destroyed.
The 3rd Doctor: Yes, I couldn't agree with you more. That's exactly what I've been trying to say to you. The Earth cargo ship was not attacked by Draconians.

"There is one thing worse than war, Madam President, and that is defeat." ~ General Williams

"Well, they've made up their minds, you see. They'll only believe us if we tell them what they want to hear. It's a pity really that the Ogrons didn't succeed in kidnapping us. Perhaps we should have been more helpful." ~ The Third Doctor

"Sentence? Where have you been? There are no sentences. Once they send you to the moon, it's forever." ~ Patel

The Master: Penny for them, Miss Grant?
Jo: You. What are you doing here?

Jo: So it was you! You ordered those Ogrons to attack the ships and pretend they were Draconians!
The Master: But of course. Those lumbering idiots could never have thought up such a brilliant scheme by themselves.

"How could I leave two dear friends in such dire straights?" ~ The Master

"Good grief. Do you know, sir, you're the first person who's believed me?" ~ The Third Doctor

"The door. It's locked! They're depressurising. Don't you understand, man? They're pumping out the air!" ~ The Third Doctor

Cross: No, sir. They stole the suits. Must have messed it up and taken ones with empty cylinders.
The 3rd Doctor: And I take it we that also locked ourselves in the airlock from the outside and switched off the air supply?
The Master: He does have a point there, you know, Governor?

"I think that those two prisoners were telling the truth. I think that your trusty, Cross, was helping them. On your instructions. Oh come, Governor. You rid yourself of a politically dangerous prisoner, and foster the legend that escape is impossible in one go. I must congratulate you." ~ The Third Doctor

"Oh come, Doctor, you know the game's up. Why not admit defeat?" ~ The Master

The Master: Oh, by the way, I need hardly warn you there is no point in trying to escape. This is an interplanetary police spaceship, specially built for carrying prisoners, as you can see.
The 3rd Doctor: Stolen, of course?
The Master: Of course.

"I didn't steal it. I just borrowed it. I fully intended to return it, I assure you. Anyway, she wasn't exactly the latest model, poor old thing." ~ The Third Doctor

"As I soon realised, the trouble with Lethbridge Stewart is that he's got a military mind.  That's the trouble though. He's hidebound, you see. He always does everything by the rules. I keep telling him. I said, there are times, you know, when you've simply got to cut right through the red tape." ~ The Third Doctor

"What an ingenious fellow you are, Doctor." ~ The Master

"Well, I should try and be a bit more hospitable, old chap. Come on, put that gun away. They've probably got us outnumbered." ~ The Third Doctor

"In such a war, there are no victors." ~ Draconian Emperor

"Ah, but I am a noble of Draconia. The honour was conferred on me by the fifteenth Emperor." ~ The Third Doctor

The Master: I too welcome your wisdom, your Majesty. Nobody could be more devoted to the cause of peace than I. As a commissioner of Earth's Interplanetary Police, I have devoted my life to the cause of law and order. And law and order can only exist in a time of peace.
The 3rd Doctor: You feeling all right, old chap?

"Great lumbering idiots! Now you tell me that you've left one of your fellows in the palace. Do you realise what this means? As soon as the effect of the hypnosound wears off, the Draconians will know who it really was who attacked them. You've ruined everything!" ~ The Master

"You'd only be wasting your time. The Ogrons have got the finest defence mechanism of all. Stupidity. They haven't got a mind for you to probe." ~ The Third Doctor

"I know, I know, women aren't allowed to speak. You know, I think it's about time that women's lib was brought to Draconia." ~ Jo Grant

The Master: I'd like to try and take the Doctor alive if possible. If not, I'll blast him out of space. Pity though.
Ogron: You do not wish to kill him?
The Master: Of course I do! But I don't know, rocket fire at long range, it's. I don't know, somehow it lacks that personal touch.

"Must I do everything myself?" ~ The Master

"You know, Miss Grant, I'm going to set a trap for the Doctor and you are going to help me." ~ The Master

"It's a form of self-conditioning. You fill your mind with nonsense and then you can't be hypnotised." ~ Jo Grant

General Williams: No doubt you're a qualified space engineer too, Doctor?
The 3rd Doctor: Naturally.

"You know as well as I do that this man does not fear death. I want him to suffer a much worse punishment. Look, my skill and cunning has brought about this war which will make you the masters of the galaxy. Leave the Doctor with me, and let him see the result of that war. Let him see the galaxy in ruins. Let him see the planet Earth, that he loves so much, in ruins, then exterminate him." ~ The Master

"Right, we'll see who rules the galaxy when this is over. Do not fail the Daleks, indeed. You stupid tin boxes." ~ The Master

"Telepathic circuits. Sending a message to the Time Lords." ~ The Third Doctor

Trivia
====================================
This story marks Roger Delgado's last appearance in Doctor Who. On 18 June 1973 he was killed in a car crash in Turkey while on the way to the location for a film called Bell of Tibet. As a result of Delgado's death, the writers chose not to cast a new actor in the role of the Master and instead abandoned future plans for the character's interaction with the Third Doctor.

Episode 5 is one of only two episodes in Doctor Who history to feature the 'Delaware Theme' during its opening as well as its closing credits. The UK broadcast used the standard theme music, but the version sent to Australia already had the unused arrangement edited in.

The planet of the Ogrons is portrayed by Beachfields Quarry, in Surrey.

Louis Mahoney (Newscaster) would later play Ponti in Planet of Evil and the elderly Billy Shipton in Blink.

Quotes
====================================
"Roll up and see the monster show! A carnival of monsters, all living in their natural habitat, wild in this little box of mine. A miracle of intragalactic technology! Roll up! Roll up! Roll..." ~ Vorg

"Are you certain we are here? Well, where you think we are. Are you sure you can steer that Tardis properly?" ~ Jo Grant

The 3rd Doctor: No, that's impossible.
Jo: Don't you ever admit that you're wrong?
The 3rd Doctor: No. That's impossible too.

"That's a plesiosaurus!  It's incredible! If this really is 1926, the plesiosaurus has been extinct for a hundred and thirty million years!" ~ The Third Doctor

"I suppose the name of this ship means nothing to you, Jo? Well, in its time, the SS Bernice was as famous a sea mystery as the Marie Celeste. A freak tidal wave was the popular explanation, although the Indian Ocean was as flat as a millpond on that night. Two days out from Bombay on June the 4th, 1926, the SS Bernice just disappeared off the face of the Earth." ~ The Third Doctor

Jo: Sonic screwdriver?
The 3rd Doctor: No, that only works on electronic locks, Jo. We need something far more primitive.
Jo: Skeleton keys.
The 3rd Doctor: Oh, they'd do fine if only we had any.
Jo: Allow me, Doctor.

"Oh, I do love being with you, Doctor. You make me feel so young." ~ Jo Grant

"What is happening? I mean, it's like a gramophone record. A stuck gramophone record." ~ Jo Grant

Jo: Where are you going?
The 3rd Doctor: To find the Tardis, and that means finding a way off this ship.

"These creatures are Tellurians, a species discovered in a distant galaxy. Scientists have been amazed at the remarkable similarity between these little chaps and our own dominant lifeform. These are the only Tellurians in captivity. Some scientists think that their discovery refutes Valdek's theory that life in the universe is infinitely variable." ~ Vorg

"What is it? My dear girl, this is a perfect example of an early pulse mechanism based on the principal of caesium decay. Oh, this is absolutely vintage stuff." ~ The Third Doctor

"I've never been small enough to get inside one of these things before. It's fascinating! It's like walking around inside a wristwatch. It's wonderful. It really is magnificent." ~ The Third Doctor

"The Interstellar Ecology Commission expressly forbids the transference of zoological specimens between planets." ~ Kalik

The 3rd Doctor: Come on, Jo, get up.
Jo: Not yet, I'm only half-cooked.

"Silence! It is an alien artefact. Where did it come from? How did it get in there?" ~ Pletrac

"Eaten? They ate a spaceship?" ~ Pletrac

Jo: Oh, Doctor, I've got to rest.
The 3rd Doctor: Yes, I'm beginning to feel the century's myself.

"No. Oh no, believe me, I'm just as angry as you are. As a matter of fact, I had a great deal to do with the banning of these miniscopes.  I managed to persuade the High Council of the Time Lords they were an offense against the dignity of sentient lifeforms." ~ The Third Doctor

"Not impossible, Jo. Nothing's impossible. There's always an answer if you can find it." ~ The Third Doctor

"The generators were built by the old Eternity Perpetual Company. They're designed to last forever. That's why the company went bankrupt." ~ Vorg

Pletrac: The function of this tribunal is to keep this planet clean. This Tellurian creature comes from outside our solar system and is a possible carrier of contagion. Furthermore the creature may be hostile.
The 3rd Doctor: Will you kindly stop referring to me as the creature, sir, or I may well become exceedingly hostile.

"And, oh yes, just as I thought. A miniscope. Now this is outrageous! Who is responsible for this device? Is it yours?" ~ The Third Doctor

"If you will allow me to rescue my young companion, and give what help I can to the rest of the unfortunates trapped in here, then I am prepared to overlook the entire matter.  If not, then you'll just have to take the consequences. Let me know when you've made up your mind." ~ The Third Doctor

"The collection of the simplest animal lifeforms is a dubious enough pursuit in itself, sir, but the collection of civilized intelligent beings is a positive crime. Now let me warn you that I intend to put an end to this shameful business." ~ The Third Doctor

Trivia
====================================
Working titles for "Carnival of Monsters" included The Labyrinth and Peepshow.  The broadcast title is the same of a Ray Bradbury short story "Carnival of Monsters" published in the 1940's. In it, a millionaire on Mars lures several Health Officials into his house. They meet a variety of gruesome fates inspired by different horror writers. However, the title of this episode may be unrelated.

The story is best remembered as being the first Doctor Who appearance for Ian Marter, who would join the regular cast in Season 12 as Harry Sullivan.  He portrays a character named John Andrews in this story, one the Tellurians captured on the SS Bernice.

This is the first story to feature the term Tellurian to mean human being. This term would appear in other stories written by Robert Holmes, such as The Two Doctors.

Robert Holmes added the subplot about the attempted overthrow of the Inter Minoran president, because Terrance Dicks was concerned that otherwise the only real threat facing Vorg and Shirna was the penalty for breaking the planet's importation policies.

Both Cheryl Hall (Shirna) and Jenny McCracken (Claire Daly) were earlier considered for the part of Jo Grant. According to the DVD commentary for the 'Special Edition' of the story, they were on the final shortlist of six actresses seen for the role. Barry Letts promised both actresses he'd use them in the future after casting Katy Manning.

The Doctor compares the disappearance of the Bernice crew to that of the Mary Celeste; an encounter between the First Doctor and the Daleks was behind the disappearance of the earlier ship's crew, although at the time the Doctor was unaware of what happened to the crew. (The Chase)

While filming on the RFA Robert Dundas (doubling for the SS Bernice), production was interrupted when it was discovered an old brass ship's compass had been stolen. The culprit turned out to be none other than Jon Pertwee, who believed that the compass was to be scrapped along with the ship and so wouldn't be missed. In fact, it was to be auctioned off along with other ship artifacts.

The appearance of a cyberman in the Miniscoop is the only appearance of the cybermen during Jon Pertwee's tenure. This was due to Terrance Dicks disliking them, as he found them boring. Vorg's line about people not wanting to see a blurry image of them is a reference to this.

Originally, the planet of Inter Minor was named Odron for a time, with the world hosting a convention of showmen.

Drashig is an anagram of dish rag.

For timing reasons, episode three's cliffhanger was edited. This would have seen the Doctor falling down a shaft when a Drashig comes upon him in the Scope interior. In the episode four reprise, the Drashig plummets after him and the Doctor is seen to have been saved by catching his foot in a rope. As broadcast, this sequence was skipped over altogether, and the Doctor's emergence from the Miniscope - originally to have occurred during episode four - was brought forward to serve as the cliffhanger instead.

Jo gets a chance to use her skeleton keys and show off her self-hyped escapology skills, first seen in Terror of the Autons.
