This story was initially envisaged as a Christmas special. Several festive references remain, such as the crew on Mars preparing for Christmas dinner, and the snowing when the Doctor arrives back on Earth as he exclaims how he likes snow.

Lindsay Duncan became the oldest actress, and briefly the oldest individual, to be cast in the companion role (although like several before her, her official status as a companion will remain debatable). As Bernard Cribbins took on the companion role in The End of Time, he became the oldest male actor and oldest individual in this role.

The episode ends with a dedication to Barry Letts. The former Doctor Who producer and writer had died several weeks before the broadcast.

In a deleted scene, the Doctor suggested that the Ice Warriors were unable to fully defeat the Flood and fled the planet as a result, explaining their absence.

This story won the 2010 Hugo Award in the category of Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form.

On November 21, 2009 (only six days after the initial broadcast, and exactly 50 years before the date the episode takes place in), David Tennant surpassed Jon Pertwee as the actor with the second-longest tenure as the Doctor. Jon Pertwee was the Doctor for 1,617 days, and following The End of Time David Tennant was the Doctor a total of 1,658 days.

"Bowie Base One" has a layout similar to the Moonbase from Gerry Anderson's TV series "UFO".

"Bowie Base One" is a reference to David Bowie's song "Life on Mars".

The Waters of Mars was the last story to feature the Tenth Doctor's blue suit.

"Planet of the Dead" had a one-off companion, Lady Christina de Souza, who was unique amongst her BBC Wales predecessors in that she was depicted as both a criminal and a member of the British aristocracy. The episode also featured the return of UNIT for its third story in 12 months. Narratively, it was perhaps most significant for beginning the "He will knock four times" story arc, ultimately resolved in The End of Time.

The story went through several drafts. These included a space opera about a giant war (possibly featuring the Chelonians); a bizarre story about time-freezing centaurs in a deserted hotel; a Star Trek pastiche; and a story about an outer space hotel where guests were disappearing - taken down to the planet below in order to be implanted with alien eggs.

The Number 200 story strand comes from the New Adventures novel The Highest Science written by Planet of the Dead co-writer Gareth Roberts.

The number of the bus, 200, is a reference to the fact that "Planet of the Dead" was advertised as Doctor Who's 200th story. It was also the first Doctor Who episode to be filmed in the HDTV format. This changeover can be likened to the move from black and white to colour production in 1970. As such, it features a more detailed, but otherwise unchanged, version of the title sequence.

"Doctor Who" was in part inspired by the British The Quatermass Experiment TV serials of the 1950s. The show paid homage by referring to Quatermass when Dr. Malcolm Taylor and the doctor are trying to figure out the wormhole Malcolm informs the doctor that it's Quatermass in which he used to figure it out.

Two double decker buses have been used for this episode. The bus in Dubai is RUA 461 W, a Bristol VRT/ECW formerly with Yorkshire Woollen bus company. The other one is an almost similar Bristol using an unknown license plate.

Both buses were meant to be intact throughout the story, but while one was en route to Dubai, it was badly knocked about at the docks by a crane driver who was careless with a container. So the film crew sent photos of the damage back to Cardiff and there the crew made similar 'alterations' to that bus so they would - almost - match. Then a few lines were added to the script to explain the sudden change in the buses's appearance.

This is the first Doctor Who episode in which series producer Russell T. Davies shares co-writing credit, and the first episode since the show's return in 2005 to credit two writers.

Lady Christina de Souza is similar to a character called 'Kate Tollinger' who was to have been introduced in a story called Crime of the Century, had Doctor Who been produced beyond Survival in 1989. Tollinger would have been a safe-cracking, lock-picking thief.

Actress Michelle Ryan, who played de Souza, was a candidate for a new companion after the departure of Billie Piper in 2006. Ryan did many of her stunts herself, including the high-wire stunt that opens the episode.

The "Alien Stingrays" and their desert-planet habitat were inspired by the movie Pitch Black.

Malcolm's apparel as he leaves his laboratory is similar to that of the Doctor's fourth incarnation. The scarf that Malcom wears as he leaves the van, is actually based on the Doctor's Brown Pinstriped Suit.

Malcolm says he had read all the Doctor's files and the Doctor asked "Really? What was your favorite? The Giant Robot?" This is a reference to the Fourth Doctor-era story Doctor Who: Robot: Part One.

Adam James (DI McMillan) is the godson of the Third Doctor, Jon Pertwee and has been best friends with actor David Tennant since they played brothers in a play in 1999.

This story was nominated for a 2010 Hugo Award in the category of "Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form," as was "The Next Doctor" and "The Waters of Mars", the latter of which ultimately won the award

As seen in David Tennant's video diary for this episode's read-through, Tennant feared that, having spent six months portraying Hamlet for the RSC, he would be unable to accurately replicate the voice he uses when portraying the Doctor. In an informal discussion with Julie Gardner, he describes his voice for Hamlet as being the same as the Doctor's (being an English accent) except "more posh" and mentioned he may have to watch his previous performances as the Doctor and practice the voice. This strongly echoes Billie Piper's dilemma when she returned to film Turn Left; in interviews with Doctor Who Confidential, Piper confessed to having forgotten how to speak in Rose's accent; it was later noted that she spoke with a noticeable lisp in several scenes of that episode.

Although the Doctor has had invitations to join him turned down by potential companions in the past (Grace Holloway in the 1996 TV movie, Mickey Smith at the end of World War Three and, initially, Donna Noble in The Runaway Bride, for example), this is one of the few occasions in which the Doctor has outright refused to take on a companion of his own volition, despite clear indications of compatibility. This also occurred with Mr Copper in Voyage of the Damned, and for much the same reason the Doctor gives Christina.

The episode was filmed during production of Series 4, the first time a Christmas special has been rolled into production of the preceding series. This allowed the Series 4 finale, Journey's End, to include a trailer for the episode. It is still considered part of Series 4, but was not included, for example, in the Complete Series 4 DVD set, but was instead later released in the Complete Specials box set. It is considered the fifteenth and final episode of Series 4 on Netflix (the first episode being Voyage of the Damned).

The DVD release of Series 4 included an alternate ending for Journey's End that would have had a cliffhanger involving the Cybermen suddenly appearing inside the TARDIS. This idea was dropped before broadcast and the opening scene of this episode gives no indication of the Doctor being in peril and at no point in the episode do Cybermen enter the TARDIS. In his book The Writer's Tale: The Final Chapter, Davies credits Doctor Who Magazine writer Benjamin Cook with convincing him to drop the cliffhanger.

This is the first Christmas Special for which a new song was not written. The only song heard in the special is the standard "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen" this has been the main Christmas carol for the Christmas specials and excluding Voyage of the Damned, it's been played at some point in all the rest of the new series Christmas episodes.

This is the first episode to be broadcast after David Tennant's announcement that he would leave the role of the Doctor in 2010. However, it is the last episode to be filmed and produced before the announcement, as Tennant was playing 'Hamlet' for the latter half of 2008 and early 2009; in fact, Tennant announced his depature at a live broadcast during the 2008 National Television Awards during the intermission of that night's production, in full costume and flanked by two Danish guards.

This episode contains no 'Next Time' trailer. This was because Planet of the Dead was not filmed until early 2009, after Tennant had finished playing 'Hamlet' opposte Patrick Stewart.

Russell T Davies revealed to Radio Times: "The Doctor finds himself staring at that inevitable day when his tenth incarnation must die..."

This episode was the subject of a quite heavy campaign of misinformation which included a false summary of the 'Fear Factor' which implied that two Doctors would be left in peril at the end. It also included misleading quotes from RTD's book and threats of not having a press screening.

Mickey Smith had previously used the term "Cyberking" in Army of Ghosts when speculating about the contents of the void ship.

To keep the mystery of the identity of David Morrissey's character a surprise, the actor was credited as 'the Doctor' in Radio Times and only as 'Jackson Lake' in the closing credits.

Russell T Davies chose the name Rosita for Jackson Lake's companion because it contained elements of 'Rose' and 'Martha'. It also happens to be Spanish for "Little Rose.

Dervla Kirwan wore special black contact lenses for the scenes of the transformed Miss Hartigan. Because the lenses didn't completely cover her eyes, however, special effects team at The Mill had to electronically paint out any glimpes of white eyeballs that appeared in shot.

This is the third time in the series that a Cybermen story (without Daleks) has directly followed a Dalek story (without Cybermen). Previous instances were The Tomb of the Cybermen following The Evil of the Daleks and Revenge of the Cybermen following Genesis of the Daleks. The reverse has occurred once, when The Power of the Daleks followed The Tenth Planet. These observations disregard non-TV stories which take place between these stories, as well as the mini-episode Music of the Spheres, which was first broadcast on radio between Journey's End and The Next Doctor, and on television six days after The Next Doctor.

This episode was the first to feature the new BBC Wales logo following the credits.

This was the final Doctor Who story to be produced in "standard definition". Beginning with the next story, the show moved to high-definition production.

David Tennant is credited as "Doctor Who" instead of the usual "the Doctor".

This is the first episode of the revived series in which the Doctor's main companion is male rather than female. Thus it is also the first full episode where no female actors are credited in the opening titles. Prior to this, no female actors were credited in the title sequences of Attack of the Graske, Time Crash, and Music of the Spheres. This would also be repeated in The End of Time

This story immediately followed The Christmas Invasion and was initially only available to subscribers to the BBC Red Button interactive service. Viewers were able to pilot the TARDIS and fight the Graske both on its native world of Griffoth and in Victorian London. From Wednesday 18 January 2006, the story was available to access via the BBC website, but only for UK residents. It was subsequently made available to international users of the website as well.

The question of whether this episode "counts" as a television story is somewhat muddied by its interactive nature. Some regard it primarily as a game, rather than an episode. However, a possible reference to the events of the story can be heard in The Sarah Jane Adventures story Whatever Happened to Sarah Jane?, which featured the first undisputed canonical appearance of the Graske, in which Sarah Jane Smith makes reference to there being some Graske activity on Earth a couple of years earlier. Gareth Roberts wrote both stories. Changelings and Graske activity at Christmas are also mentioned by Jack Harkness in his Monster Files, using footage from this adventure.

Doctor Who: The Encyclopedia states that it is set after Tooth and Claw.

The Doctor mentions that if the viewer switches their television to ITV tonight the galaxy may implode. This is presumably because the BBC and ITV are rival companies. In his eleventh form, he said that ITV had gone off the air in the second Doctor Who Proms, as a result of saving the Royal Albert Hall and the BBC Proms.

Technically, David Tennant is not credited in this episode as "the Doctor". He receives only pre-title billing. This makes this the only bit of Doctor Who to ever appear on television which does not credit the role of "the Doctor" or "Doctor Who". Remarkably, this bit of trivia includes "Mission to the Unknown" in which the Doctor doesn't even appear at all.

Prior to broadcast it was variously known as Proms Special and Proms Cutaway, with episode writer Russell T Davies using this as the title when promoting the episode in Doctor Who Magazine.

The story's ultimate title, as well as the concept of music generated by the Universe itself, are based on Pythagoras' ancient philosophical concept of musica universalis.

According to Doctor Who Magazine, production of this mini-episode officially concluded production of Series 4 on May 3, 2008. Davies told DWM that he had to write the episode in a special way as it is scheduled to be broadcast both on television and on radio. This makes this special the first such hybrid episode ever produced for the series.

For the first time since 1966 the original closing theme arrangement by Delia Derbyshire, as introduced in 1963's An Unearthly Child, is used in lieu of Murray Gold's work. The specific reason for including this version of the theme was not readily apparent to those who watched the mini-episode in isolation from the Proms event. As explained to the audience in the Royal Albert Hall by Proms host Freema Agyeman, it was employed as a way to feature a piece of music which celebrated the 50th anniversary of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. Some have erroneously identified the version played as the arrangement featured up until the late 1970s, but the lack of echo identifies it as the original version; this is the first time the original rendition has been used on a Doctor Who episode since 1967.

This is an unusual example of the BBC Wales version of Doctor Who crediting only one actor above the titles. It had only previously happened with Attack of the Graske. Both times this occurred the lone actor credited was the same: David Tennant.

One of two major scenes cut from the episode before broadcast was an extra piece of dialogue on Bad Wolf Bay where the Doctor hands his clone a coral-like piece of the TARDIS, telling him to grow his own. When the clone Doctor protests that it takes thousands of years to grow a TARDIS, DoctorDonna provides him with a faster solution, so that Rose and the cloned Doctor can travel through space "as it should be". This was mentioned in The Doctor's Data section of the Doctor Who Adventures magazine, and in the 398th edition of Doctor Who Magazine, Russell T Davies states that it is perfectly fine to assume that this part of the scene did actually occur. The scene is included on the Series 4 DVD Box Set. (Also if you look closely the clone Doctor is still holding the coral piece in the actual episode.)

Journey's End and The Stolen Earth together feature references to every episode of the fourth series. In addition, references dating back to the first series of the revived show (involving Rose) and Sarah Jane's tenure as the companion of the Third and Fourth Doctor also appear.

Almost every companion of the Ninth and Tenth Doctors appears or is referenced in some way in this episode (including Astrid Peth), with the sole exception of Adam Mitchell.

Blue Peter presenter Gethin Jones operates a Dalek in this episode, returning to Doctor Who after his brief appearance as a Cybus Cyberman in The Age of Steel.

Dalek Caan refers to the Doctor as a 'threefold man'. The meaning becomes clear in this episode with both the copy of the Doctor and 'Doctor-Donna'.

As with the previous episode, the opening credits are augmented to include six names, with several overflow acting credits displayed after the opening sequence.

This story augments the notion that Time Lords have some measure of control over the regenerative process. In truth, most regenerations have added at least a little to the general mythos about the process. From the notion that a particular physiognomy could be imposed upon the Second Doctor in The War Games, details have been added about how the process works almost every time one has been depicted. In this case, writer Russell T Davies builds upon his earlier idea that a Time Lord can re-grow whole body parts during "the first 15 hours" following a regeneration (The Christmas Invasion). Here he suggests that a Time Lord can stop the process prior to entering the final stage, provided that he has a matching genetic receptacle into which he can store the energy. However it is not explicitly stated if this "partial" regeneration uses up one of the regenerations in the cycle or not.

The scene where the Daleks are speaking German is possibly a tongue-in-cheek reference to the fact that Terry Nation based the Daleks on the Nazis. It is also possibly a reference to the fact Daleks have no fear so they let the locals know exactly what they're doing.

This story marks the departure of Catherine Tate (Donna Noble) and Billie Piper (Rose Tyler). In an interview with Doctor Who Magazine, Piper was quoted as saying she doesn't see this as a permanent depature. Catherine Tate had no plans to return at that moment, but she had not ruled out a return in the future. Elizabeth Sladen, in an interview published after the episode was broadcast, said she doesn't expect to appear on Doctor Who again, although her own spinoff, The Sarah Jane Adventures, would subsequently continue a few months later. However, all three appeared the following year in The End of Time.

Jack has flirted with or shown interest in all of the Doctor's companions appearing in this episode save Donna and Jackie. It is interesting to note that Jack does not pursue the two women who have exhibited the most aggressive attitudes towards the opposite sex, and who would arguably be the most likely to return his advances. Donna even jokes in the previous episode about Jack hugging her, which he laughs off.

The end of this episode being one of the saddest in the history of the programme, it also has one of the largest body counts, with billions of Daleks, a substantial number of humans, possibly the death of Davros and, to an extent, Donna.

Following her appearance, Elisabeth Sladen was quoted in several interviews as predicting she expected this to be her final appearance on Doctor Who. As it happened, she would make one final cameo appearance in The End of Time Part 2, and the Doctor would later make two appearances on The Sarah Jane Adventures.

There was originally a scene where a Dalek Saucer landed at Westminister and one in which the Daleks exterminated the Prime Minister, Aubrey Fairchild, before the Dalek invasion force emerged from the saucer. An unseen character in The Next Doctor was named Aubrey Fairchild.

Scientist and author Richard Dawkins has a cameo as himself. Dawkins is married to Lalla Ward, the actress who portrayed Romana II. The two were introduced by Douglas Adams, who met Ward in his capacity as the show's script editor during the time Ward's ex-husband, Tom Baker, played the Fourth Doctor.

The Doctor mentions a previous attempt to move the Earth "a long time ago", a reference to the goal of the Daleks in The Dalek Invasion of Earth, where the Daleks try to place a drive system into the centre of the Earth so they can pilot the planet around the galaxy.

This is the fourth time that the Daleks have returned with a leader in a finale. In TV: The Evil of the Daleks they returned led by their emperor; in the 2005 finale, The Parting of the Ways, the Daleks were led by the Dalek Emperor; and in the 2006 finale, Doomsday, Dalek Sec led the Cult of Skaro. The two-part Dalek story in 2007 was shown as the fourth and fifth episodes of the series (Daleks in Manhattan and Evolution of the Daleks).

For the first time, the opening credits incorporate not two or three names, but six, adding Freema Agyeman, John Barrowman and Elisabeth Sladen to the Tennant, Tate and Piper credits of the previous week. The typeface used for these credits is slightly different than that usually used. In addition, several "overflow" cast credits are featured over the first scene after the opening sequence, a first for the series (Penelope Wilton, Adjoa Andoh, Eve Myles and Gareth David-Lloyd). Although the appearances of Harriet Jones and Francine Jones are clearly intended to be surprises, the surprise is weakened for anyone who recognised the names of Wilton and Andoh in these opening credits. Despite their major roles in this episode, neither Bernard Cribbins nor Jacqueline King received similar credits.

The differences between the child-friendly Sarah Jane Adventures and the very adult-oriented Torchwood are reflected in the onscreen conference. Sarah Jane mentions that she tries to steer away from Torchwood because they have "too many guns", nodding to Luke as she does so. Despite this, Jack cannot resist flirting with her and she seems to appreciate his compliment.

The concept of the bees leaving the earth and heading to another planet as it seems the end is near strongly reflects the dolphins from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, who also left the planet right before its impending doom. Though most likely a coincidence, it should be noted that Douglas Adams, who wrote Hitchhiker's Guide, was a writer and script editor for Doctor Who.

Another reference to The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy occurs when a Dalek near the start of the episode shouts, "Resistance is useless". This line was often used by Vogons (an alien in THGTTG) when they captured Arthur Dent and Ford Prefect.

The time beetle almost exactly parodies the Eight Legs from Planet of the Spiders. They are both arthropods, sit on the backs of humans, and can remain unseen.

A circle of mirrors was also used to expose and reveal the Mara (as is used here to reveal the beetle) in Kinda.

Despite being billed in the opening credits and featuring prominently in the episode, Rose is never referred to by name.

Billie Piper was seen at the end of Partners in Crime, and had short cameos in The Poison Sky and Midnight. The Partners in Crime cameo was filmed during production of Turn Left, as was the short piece of footage used in Midnight and The Poison Sky. This means no less than three directors would have been at work on the Doctor Who set during the production schedule of Turn Left - the main episode's director, Graeme Harper, the director of Partners in Crime, James Strong, and the director of Midnight, Alice Troughton.

Unusually, the episodes featuring Piper were filmed relatively early in the production of the season, which allowed a clip of Rose from this episode to be included in the cinema trailer released in advance of the season being broadcast.

Chipo Chung last appeared in Utopia as the Malmooth, Chantho, Professor Yana's personal assistant. She plays the fortune teller in this story.

This is the 'Doctor-lite' episode of the series, similar to Love & Monsters and Blink, albeit with a much darker storyline. Unlike previous Doctor-lite stories, however, the focus is given to the companion, rather than her also taking a minor role. They used the same scheduling trick in the previous episode, Midnight, which featured virtually none of Donna. These episodes allow the production team to complete fourteen episodes (including the Christmas episode) in a schedule originally designed to complete thirteen. A second team can be filming the "extra" episode, with the main cast filming only a day or so. Their footage is judiciously spread through the episode to give the impression of a larger interaction, although in the case of Turn Left, David Tennant's participation was restricted to the opening scene and epilogue, with a body double used for the scene where Rose and Donna witness the Doctor's dead body being loaded into the ambulance.

A reference to something on Donna's back was last heard in The Fires of Pompeii when Lucius Petrus Dextrus saw into the future.

Billie Piper states in the accompanying Doctor Who Confidential episode that she had forgotten how to play Rose, and needed to watch past episodes to remind herself.

A recurring theme in previous episodes hinted that Donna would die in the future which occurs in this episode. However, this was an alternate reality Donna who sacrificed herself in order to prevent her past self from taking the wrong turn thus forcing her to meet the Doctor as was planned.

Part of this episode is filmed in China Town, though not the one in London, but recreated in Cardiff. Chinese people living in South Wales were invited to be background extras via Facebook at the end of 2007. They had to reply to the Doctor Who casting crew with their name and sizes for costumes to be made for them and they were paid approx £70 for the day. David Tennant was seen in 'China Town' when he took time out of filming though staying on location to appear on Blue Peter to appeal to viewers to donate shoes to their Shoebiz appeal.

Donna is told she can have her fortune told for free because she has red hair. This is a reference to Chinese culture, since red is considered very lucky in China. It's also a common carny trick to draw people into the attraction; half off for lovely ladies, men wearing hats, anything that matches some characteristic of the person being appealed to.

This is the first episode in Series 4 in which the Doctor is present when Rose Tyler appears although he does not see her.

Donna was largely absent from this episode, as Catherine Tate was filming Turn Left. While the previous two series included one episode each referred to as "Doctor-lite" for including only brief appearances by the Doctor and, by extension, his companion, this was the first time a "companion-lite" episode focusing on the Doctor by himself has been attempted in the revived series.

Dee Dee mentions the lost moon of Poosh, continuing the theme of disappearing planetary bodies featured throughout series 4.

David Troughton, who plays the professor, is the son of Patrick Troughton, who played the Second Doctor. Episode director Alice Troughton is not directly related. David Troughton appeared in his father's final story The War Games, and also in the Third Doctor story The Curse of Peladon and is a veteran contributor to the Big Finish Productions audio dramas.

The working title for this story was River's Run. When BBC Video announced the North American release of the Series 4 DVD box set, this title was used in the episode list and not Forest of the Dead. The Radio Times also used this working title. According to REF: Doctor Who: The Writer's Tale - The Final Chapter, the title was changed not long before broadcast.

In River Song's voiceover, she mentions the "skies of all the worlds might just turn dark", a possible reference to the Darkness, a story arc element that plays out in the series 4 finale. Another Possible reference to his "Reboot" of the universe where as before he did so the Predestination Paradox was a universe with no lights in the sky and they were all shown to be "expiring" before.

CAL was also the name of the computer graphics company that created the title sequence used between 1987 and 1989 for the Seventh Doctor's TV adventures. A result of this work was the creation of the first photo-realistic CGI TARDIS, featured in Bad Wolf.

This is the second episode in this series to have a character (River) share the name of a character from the Joss Whedon show Firefly. The first was Cobb in The Doctor's Daughter.

In the girl's house, on a drawing on the wall, there is a picture of a blonde haired girl and a wolf. This may be a reference to Rose and Bad Wolf.

Moffat's recurring theme "everybody lives" returns again in this episode. In the BBC podcast associated with this episode, Moffat and Davies point out that so far in the four major storylines that he has contributed to the series, the only "final" deaths that have occurred have been due to old age (such as Billy Shipton and Kathy Nightingale) or illness (Madame de Pompadour). Moffat consequently promises (in the podcast) that he will kill people off in more dramatic fashion in future stories, proven to be true in The Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone.

The concept of downloading human consciousness as data - even after physical death - and the philosophical issues surrounding this is an issue being addressed by futurists in real-life, with scientists such as Ray Kurzweil speculating that technology will allow the uploading of consciousness to computers within a generation in his book, The Age of Spiritual Machines.

A recurring theme in this and the preceding episode is "spoilers". This is a term that was coined in the 1990s by science fiction fandom to address the circulation of information revealing the plots and endings of TV shows and movies. Interestingly, the fourth series of Doctor Who contains several examples of plot twists and cameos that were successfully protected from "spoilers". Other examples of successful spoiler protection include the appearance of Catherine Tate at the end of Doomsday. Examples of plot twists that were not successfully protected from "spoilers" included the return of Rose in Series 4 - spoiled in part by people witnessing the filming - and the regeneration of Christopher Eccleston at the end of Series 1 - spoiled by the BBC publicity office itself.

Russell T Davies feels this episode is more frightening than Steven Moffat's series 3 episode Blink, which rated a 5.5 out of 5 on the official Doctor Who website 'Fear Factor' feature.

Steven Moffat continues his theme of highlighting childhood fears. In Blink it was statues coming to life, in The Girl in the Fireplace it was monsters under the bed, and in The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances, it was the fear of losing your parents.

Steven Moffat stated that British newspaper The Sun got a hold of the script for the episode and threatened to publish it. Moffat jokingly told them to do it; he later remarked, "I'd like to see The Sun publish that many words in a day."

While the Doctor is hacking into the girl's TV, she is watching the CBBC show Pedro and Frankesheep. Previous real-life kids shows whose clips have been shown on Doctor Who include the Doctor watching Tommy Zoom in The Poison Sky, the Master watching The Teletubbies in The Sound of Drums, and the Master (again) watching The Clangers in The Sea Devils.

The spoilers theme may be an in-joke about DW spoilers (especially online). Additionally, the word "spoilers" is said twice in rapid succession in the trailer for the next episode, which may be a comment on the nature of the trailers themselves.

There is, perhaps, unintentional irony to the Doctor's line, "No, I never land on Sundays. Sundays are boring." Given that Saturdays are "good", according to The Stolen Earth, it could also be a reference to the fact that the day after a new episode of Doctor Who is broadcast is comparatively boring. Former companion Ace also once mentioned that she found Sundays boring in Survival.

The Library's front desk looks like a redecorated version of a control console from The Sontaran Stratagem/The Poison Sky or the teleport control unit from Voyage of the Damned.

In the associated Doctor Who Confidential episode, Steven Moffat says that he imagined River found the gun (as left behind by Jack) in the TARDIS during her future travels.

A different opening and conclusion to the episode were filmed. The two scenes take place in the mid-1970s and feature another actress playing the aged Christie, who begins the episode by having flashbacks and dreams relating to her adventure of some 50 years earlier. The ending of the episode featured the Doctor and Donna visiting Christie, upon which she begins to remember what happened and is shown a copy of the facsimile edition of Death in the Clouds from the year 5 billion. When it was decided to abandon the framing sequence, this second scene was remounted in the TARDIS. Both scenes were presented to the public for the first time in the 2008 DVD box set of Series 4.

David Tennant's father makes a cameo as a footman.

The Agatha Christie book the Doctor produces from the trunk underneath the Tardis is a Fontana Paperback fascimile edition, published in 1987. Presumably the Year 5,000,000 copyright page was somehow transplanted in.

The disappearance of bees is frequently mentioned during Series 4. Its significance is eventually revealed in The Stolen Earth. In the real world, both bumble bees and honey bees are disappearing from the globe, a major concern.

Christopher Benjamin (Colonel Hugh Curbishley) had previously appeared in Inferno and The Talons of Weng-Chiang, two classic series episodes.

Georgia Moffett is the real-life daughter of Fifth Doctor actor Peter Davison. In 2004 Georgia asked to be considered for the role of Rose Tyler; she also auditioned for a role in The Unicorn and the Wasp. Her appearance comes not long after her father guest-starred in Time Crash. A few months after filming, David Tennant and Georgia Moffett began a romantic relationship. In summer 2010, Moffett became pregnant with the couple's first child, which led to them moving in together and becoming engaged later that year. In March 2011 Moffett gave birth to a daughter named Olive, and she and Tennant married on 30 December 2011. He also adopted her older child.

According to the BBC Podcast Russell T Davies said the original intention was to kill Jenny off at the end of the episode. It was Steven Moffat who expressed the desire to bring her back to life.

According to the book Doctor Who: Companions and Allies, it was the Source that brought Jenny back to life.

Jenny's impressive acrobatics in a corridor full of deadly laser beams was inspired by Britney Spears' Toxic video. Toxic was played during The End of the World.

The two Hath named in credits would appear to be named after famous actors, "Hath Peck" drawing his name from Gregory Peck and "Hath Gable" taking his from actor Clark Gable.

Jenny's story arc throughout this episode is very reminscent of the Biblical story of Christ. She is conceived from the one parent, though the supernatural element is removed in lieu of the progenitor machine. She is also shown to possess physiological attributes reminscent of her father, namely two hearts and advanced intellect. She sacrifices herself and is ultimately resurrected. The frequent references to the Doctor as the "lonely god" help this representation as his daughter as Christ.

When the Doctor cuts off Staal's speech on the video screen in mid flow, a clip from CBeebies cartoon Tommy Zoom is featured. The original plan to use a clip from Shaun the Sheep fell through.

When the Doctor yells at Colonel Mace, David Tennant's gold tooth can be visibly seen. This became the subject of an internet meme wondering if the Doctor regenerated them or if he has practised lacklustre dental hygiene in his tenth incarnation's relatively short life and, that being the case, chastising him.

This episode marks the first television appearance of the Sontarans in twenty-three years. Their last regular series appearance was in The Two Doctors. The last time they were referred to was in 2007 in Eye of the Gorgon. They had also appeared in several non-canonical or questionably canonical productions, including "A Fix with Sontarans" in 1985 and the early-1990s independent production Shakedown: Return of the Sontarans.

This show was made during the thirty-fifth anniversary of the Sontarans.

In The Time Warrior the Sontarans were described as "nasty, brutish and short". This is the first time that they are shown to actually be shorter than normal human stature.

UNIT has now been rebranded as the UNified Intelligence Taskforce, having previously been known as the United Nations Intelligence Taskforce. This followed a request by the United Nations shortly after the series returned to TV in 2005. Nonetheless, Martha still refers to UNIT receiving funding from the United Nations and the later Children of Earth: Day One indicates that the UN still commands UNIT.

The cloning vat in this story is the fountain from The Fires of Pompeii, redressed.

The table that is used to hold the real Martha is used in the Torchwood episode Cyberwoman. Also the metal headware that Martha has on at the same time looks like mind probe used the episode Sleeper.

The snow scenes were shot in a boiling hot week in August, using fake snow. This was done using tiny pieces of paper, as pointed out in this episode's Confidential.

The transformation of Halpen into an Ood was originally far more graphic, but after the footage was viewed it was re-edited to be less horrific for a family audience.

Russell T Davies noted during production of the Ood's introductory episodes that he considered their home world to be close to that of the Sensorites.

The theme of humans exploiting alien life had previously been touched upon in two Season 2 episodes of Torchwood that aired a few months before this episode: Meat and Reset. The difference here is that freedom for the aliens in the Torchwood episodes came through their deaths, whereas most of the Ood survive.

The Ood may be inspired by the Illithids, a race from Dungeons and Dragons. Both are psychically linked to an 'elder brain', have tentacles for mouths, are capable of turning creatures into their own kind, and are linked to slavery- the Illithids were slave masters who came from the distant future, and it has been speculated that their arrogance may lead them to becoming the slaves at some point.

One of episode writer James Moran's favourite stories is City of Death, so there's a deliberate reference to that when Caecilius buys the TARDIS, thinking it's a piece of modern art. In City of Death, the TARDIS is parked in an art gallery, causing a pair of critics (John Cleese and Eleanor Bron) to discuss its artistic merits. Coincidentally, City of Death was the first episode of the classic series to involve filming outside of the UK, while The Fires of Pompeii was the first episode of the series revival to have major filming done outside the UK.

This is Karen Gillan's first appearance in Doctor Who. She would later be cast as the Eleventh Doctor's first companion Amy Pond.

The Pyrovile were originally called Pyrovillaxians. This was shortened to Pyrovellians, then Pyrovile.

In the accompanying edition of Doctor Who Confidential (The Italian Job) Russell T Davies confirms that Caecilius and his family were based on characters from a series of Latin text books used in secondary schools.

The fountain in this story is used as the cloning vat in The Sontaran Stratagem.

The 'Petrus Dextrus' in Lucius Petrus Dextrus translates roughly to 'stone right-hand'. This is a reference to his right arm, which had turned to stone.

The Doctor jokes that Donna is from Barcelona, a reference to a running gag in Fawlty Towers. The Ninth and Tenth Doctors also talked of visiting the planet Barcelona.

The episode addresses a long-standing issue of the "gift of translation" the Doctor or the TARDIS bestows upon companions. It is revealed that while the Doctor and Donna hear the Romans speaking colloquial English (with Cockney accents in some cases), the Romans hear them speaking Latin. When Donna and the Doctor actually speak Latin phrases, the Romans hear this as Celtic (as the English language hadn't yet developed).

As Geoff was to have been a recurring character in the season, the producers chose to remove Attfield's scenes and bring back Bernard Cribbins to play Wilfred Mott, the character he played in Voyage of the Damned; the character was retconned to become Donna's grandfather. Attfield's scenes were preserved and included on the subsequent Series 4 DVD release.

The Adipose developed from Russell T Davies' idea that alien genetics were hidden in doses of a Botox-like drug, resulting in the people injected being overwhelmed by the genetic code and transforming into aliens; in his Writer's Tale he describes it as "Ladies Who Lunch/Lurch" (one of his cartoons included in the book shows his take on the idea). A similar plot was later used in The Vampires of Venice.

According to his memoir The Writer's Tale, Russell T Davies originally planned to introduce a new companion named Penny Carter in this episode, who he describes as 30-something, recently jilted by a boyfriend, and strong-willed in the vein of Donna Noble. When Catherine Tate became interested in reprising her role as Donna this idea was dropped, although a minor character in the episode (the journalist) was given the name Penny Carter.

A certain shot shows an army of Adipose in the streets of London. This was extremely complex and took the series' CGI team (The Mill) more time than most shots used for the series to complete. They used the software called Massive, which was created and used by Weta Digital, who created all CGI for the Lord of the Rings film trilogy.

Pointing the functioning ends of a sonic screwdriver and a sonic pen at one another (or, as the Doctor put it, "two identical sonic devices") creates a sonic feedback in the surrounding area.

The Doctor says he's met 'cat people' before; he may be referring to the cat people he met in New Earth and Gridlock, or during Survival.

In The Fires of Pompeii the planet Pyrovillia, like Adipose 3, has also gone missing. In both cases, the mystery was solved in The Stolen Earth.
