According to his book The Writer's Tale, Russell T Davies planned to keep the departure of Christopher Eccleston a secret until the surprise regeneration. However, soon after the broadcast of The Unquiet Dead, the third episode of the season, the BBC's press office prematurely announced Eccleston's departure, which was followed several weeks later by confirmation that Tennant had been signed as the new Doctor, thereby removing both elements of surprise from the episode.

The guns used by Jack and the Game Station people are Heckler and Koch G36Ks.

Although he is soon brought back to life, Jack's death in this episode makes him the first companion to die since Kamelion in Planet of Fire.

The Doctor's farewell recording to Rose - "Have a good life ..." - is quoted in the lyrics of "Song for Ten", featured in the next full episode, The Christmas Invasion.

This episode marks the last time the lead character is identified as "Doctor Who" in the closing credits until The Next Doctor. Beginning with The Christmas Invasion, the credit reverts to "The Doctor" as it had been during the last nine years of the original series.

This is the first televised story since Frontier in Space to feature the Daleks without having "Dalek" in the episode's title, other than the brief appearance of a single Dalek in The Five Doctors.

This is the second Dalek story to feature a human servant of the Daleks called "controller" betraying the Daleks and committing self-sacrifice to help the Doctor, the first being Day of the Daleks.

This is the last episode until The Beast Below in which David Tennant does not make an appearance.

Having previously played Martin in Remembrance of the Daleks, William Thomas (Cleaver) became the first actor to appear in both the classic and revived series of Doctor Who. He would later play Gwen Cooper's father Geraint in Torchwood.

The means by which Margaret plans to use the tribophysical waveform macrokinetic extrapolator as a pan-dimensional surfboard to escape Earth is highly reminiscent of the board used by the Silver Surfer, a character appearing in publications by Marvel Comics, whose UK division publishes Doctor Who Monthly.

When the Doctor and his associates march into Cardiff City Hall to capture Margaret, the Doctor is the only one not wearing a scarf, a subtle in-joke reference to the Fourth Doctor.

The Edge of Destruction was the first story to suggest that there was some sort of 'power' beneath the console.

During his dinner with Margaret Blaine, the Doctor eats steak — evidently, he has given up his vegetarianism, which the Sixth Doctor began to practice at the end of The Two Doctors. (He also took a slice of turkey in The Empty Child.)

It would later be established in Fragments that Torchwood Three had been in existence since at least 1899 in Cardiff, with Jack involved in the organisation since 1899 and in charge from the end of 1999. This means that the Doctor's arrival near the rift, his party's reunion with Mickey, and the subsequent Slitheen adventure -- all involving Captain Jack -- takes place very close to the older Captain Jack and his Torchwood team. A possible reference to this occurs in Utopia when Jack mentions having to wait until a version of the Doctor that coincided with him arrived; encountering the Doctor and his younger self at this point would have been unacceptable. In addition, a third, older Jack, cryogenically frozen, is also nearby, unknown to both younger Jacks. (Torchwood: Exit Wounds) The later episode Utopia would reveal that the Doctor somehow became aware of (or perhaps always knew) of Jack gaining immortality and this is why he left him behind following the defeat of the Daleks in The Parting of the Ways. In the book, The Twilight Streets, it is established that Jack locked himself and his team inside the Hub for the day to prevent them from meeting his younger self.

This is the second - and last - time, that the cliffhanger from the previous episode was resolved before the main title sequence. The first was in World War Three, earlier in series one. This practise would fall out of favour amongst the BBC Wales production staff. Since 2005, all "part two" pre-titles sequences have been comprised entirely of a "part one" recap, or of a recap plus a seemingly unrelated teaser.

When Nancy approaches the crashed ship and cuts the barbed-wire fence, the score features the brisk string motif that would become the featured motif in the theme to Torchwood.

Several of Jamie's abilities were left unexplained in the finale of the episode, including his ability to make a door close by pointing at it.

Because the episode ran short, Steven Moffat quickly wrote the scene in which Nancy returns to warn the orphans, during which the Empty Child possesses the typewriter.

River Song would nick Jack's squareness gun from the TARDIS and use it in "Silence in the Library"

The word dancing is frequently used in this episode as a metaphor for sex. Moffat would again use the same metaphor in "The Girl in the Fireplace" in series two.

"The Doctor Dances" — along with his script for the preceding episode "The Empty Child" — landed writer (and future showrunner) Steven Moffat a Hugo Award.

The Bad Wolf reference in the episode is subtle: although you can barely see it, the bomb that Jack catches in the tractor beam has "Schlechter Wolf" written on its side. Schlechter Wolf means Bad Wolf in German.

"The Empty Child" is notable for being the first appearance of Captain Jack Harkness in Doctor Who.

Steven Moffat's original outline envisaged Jax (masquerading under the alias "Jack Harkness") as an interstellar alien soldier who befriends the Doctor but intimidates Rose. He was to be tracking an escaped child-creature, the story's antagonist.

Although slated to become a companion, John Barrowman's name is not added to the opening credits. The notion of adding a third name to reflect an "expanded roster" would not be introduced until Barrowman's return to the series two years later in Utopia.

Jack Harkness becomes the first ongoing LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual or Transgender) character in Doctor Who, although actor Barrowman is not the first LGBT actor to be cast in a major role in the series. Matthew Waterhouse, who played Adric, one of the Fifth Doctor's companions, was the first openly gay actor cast by Doctor Who.

When Captain Jack mocks the Doctor and Rose for their out-of-place outfits ("Flag Girl was bad enough - but U-boat captain?"), he is actually spot on - the Doctor's leather jacket is in fact a vintage 1938 German U-boat commander's jacket.

Jack tells Rose about a "fully-equipped Chula warship" that had landed in London. "Chula" is actually the name of a restaurant where writer Steven Moffat first met fellow writers Mark Gatiss, Rob Sherman, and Paul Cornell to celebrate getting the job on Doctor Who.

The hospital where The Doctor meets Dr. Constantine, Albion Hospital, is the same hospital where they took the "Space Pig" in Doctor Who: Aliens of London.

This is the first time the TARDIS telephone rings in the revival series.  In the original series, in season 3, during the scene that bridges "The Hall of Dolls" and "The Dancing Floor", the Celestial Toymaker calls Steven & Dodo on the TARDIS phone.

When the Doctor enters the nightclub, the performer is singing "It Had to be You," but the lyrics are modified: "...cause nobody else gave me a thrill, when I uphold your silence still..." When Steven Moffat, this episode's writer takes over as the series' lead in series 5, "The Silence" is a repeating theme and recurring characters.

The scar on the back of the gas-mask zombie's hands also mimics the crack in the universe, which is introduced in series 5 and is a recurring image through series 7.

Early drafts of the adventure included the character of Jamie's father, who would silently and anonymously appear to aid Nancy and the war orphans. The climactic discovery of his true identity would be accompanied by the revelation that he is German, providing an alternative motivation to Nancy's shame.

The nanogenes were originally called "nanites" but this was changed because of concerns about the same term's usage in the Star Trek franchise.

This story shows a demonstration of the Blinovitch Limitation Effect - that crossing and affecting timestreams can have unforeseen effects.

The Reapers are not mentioned by name on screen. They are similar to Chronovores.

The Doctor's insistence that adult Rose does not physically touch the infant Rose is consistent with the Blinovitch Limitation Effect as observed in Mawdryn Undead with the 1977 and 1983 versions of Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart.

Even though the Doctor has met his different incarnations many times, this is only the second time that the Doctor has met a second version of his current incarnation in a televised episode. This previously happened to the Third Doctor in TV: Day of the Daleks. The Eleventh Doctor would later meet a second version of himself several times in The Big Bang, Space/Time, and Last Night.

Adam has the dubious distinction of being the first (and, to date, only) known companion to have his TARDIS-travelling rights revoked by the Doctor due to bad behaviour - all other companions forced to stay behind were either left for their own safety (e.g. Sarah Jane Smith, Donna Noble) or because the Doctor thought it was better for them they stayed in one place (e.g. Susan Foreman).

According to Russell T Davies, this episode was based on an idea which he submitted to the Doctor Who production team in the early 1980s.

The Jagrafess's full name is Mighty Jagrafess of the Holy Hadrojassic Maxarodenfoe, the longest monster name in Doctor Who so far.

The shortening of a long, almost unpronouncable alien name to "Max" also occurs in the 1986 film Flight of the Navigator.

Simon Pegg had great difficulty saying "The Mighty Jagrafess of the Holy Hadrojassic Maxarodenfoe".

Pegg was originally slated to play Rose Tyler's father in Father's Day, but due to a scheduling conflict took the role of The Editor in this episode instead.

The original story outline was set in the year 8922.

According to Doctor Who Confidential, Robert Shearman had to write a second version of the script because it was not initially known if the new series could obtain the rights to use the Daleks from Terry Nation's estate, so he had to create an alternate alien race that would have been used had the Daleks not been available.

At first the estate of Terry Nation refused permission for them to use Daleks in the show (Terry Nation held copyright over the Daleks). One of the reasons they refused permission was because of the BBC granting permission for the Daleks to be used in Looney Tunes: Back in Action. A huge fan of Doctor Who, Steve Martin, who was the one who insisted Daleks be used in the movie, heard about the news and wrote a letter of apology to the Terry Nation estate and upon receiving it, the Terry Nation estate granted permission.

Had the Daleks been unavailable, Russell T. Davies had made a sketch of a potential replacement robotic creature called "future human". The design of this creature was later adapted as the Toclafane in TV: The Sound of Drums.

Though it has not been confirmed, this is likely the first episode of the revived series in which the events were possibly changed by later stories, as in this episode no one seemed to know what a Dalek was, despite the previous huge invasions from 2007 to 2009.

The year the Dalek landed on Earth, 1962, was the year prior to 1963, the debut of Doctor Who (and by extension, the Dalek race itself).

This is the first televised Dalek story not to feature their creator Davros or use the ... of the Daleks naming scheme sinceDeath to the Daleks in 1974.

When a Slitheen disguised as a policeman appears outside Mickey's flat, the word "Salford" appears as graffiti on the wall near the elevator. Salford is Christopher Eccleston's home-town.

According to Russell T Davies (among others), this episode was called Aliens of London Part Two until the last minute, when the name was changed to World War 3, soon amended to World War Three.

Elements of the story parody the 2003 invasion of Iraq and the actions of the Prime Minister, Tony Blair. This includes a pre-emptive strike based on incorrect information, namely the presence of "massive weapons of destruction" which could be deployed in 45 seconds (as opposed to Blair's "weapons of mass destruction" that could be deployed in "45 minutes").

The use of vinegar on calcium "just like Hannibal" references the story of how Hannibal's engineers, while crossing the Alps, heated boulders that blocked their way with wood fires, then poured vinegar over them. The rocks, weakened by the heat, were broken up by the vinegar into smaller pieces, which were then easily moved to clear a path.

The submarine HMS Taurean is completely fictional. Also, aside from the unlikelihood of being able to launch a missile over the internet, the Harpoon missile is primarily an anti-ship missile and not launched against targets inland (a variant, the AGM-84E, is meant for coastal targets and ships in port). The Trafalgar-class submarines do carry Tomahawk missiles, which would have been a more appropriate weapon.

Continuing the "bad wolf" theme, the American newsreader announcing the UN's decision is named "Mal Loup", French for "Bad Wolf". The name appears not in the televised clip, but the version on Mickey's website.

The scene where the pig-like "alien" is breaking thought the metal door with Dr Sato watching in shock is reminiscent of an almost identical moment in the 1996 Doctor Who television movie, in which the newly-regenerated Eighth Doctor breaks through the metal door of the morgue, terrifying a hospital worker.

A poster announcing Rose's disappearance states that she has not been seen since 6 March, 2005. However, the BBC-produced "official" UNIT website indicates that the climactic events of Rose happened on 26 March. The same site also dates this episode at either 26 May or 28 June 2006. If the June date is accepted, Boom Town (and also The Parting of the Ways) would have to take place in late December 2006 — the same week as The Christmas Invasion (dated to 2006 by the Guinevere One website). On the other hand, if only on-screen evidence is accepted, Aliens of London would take place in March 2006, Boom Town in September, and The Parting of the Ways later in the autumn or early winter.

The official police poster is the first reference to the Powell Estate on the television series. In whole, the notice says, "Rose Tyler has been missing from her home on the Powell Estate since 6 March 2005. Rose is described as 19 years old, 5 feet 4 inches in height, slim build with shoulder-length blonde hair. Anyone with information regarding Rose should contact 0207 946000." The photograph used is one of Billie Piper herself, rather than one of Piper playing Rose. Several other home-made posters are seen on Jackie's table, including one with a banner headline saying "WHERE IS ROSE?".

When the Doctor complains of being slapped by Rose's mother, Rose laughingly remarks, "You're so gay!" This remark has caused some controversy in fan circles, some seeing it as an anti-homosexual slur. Davies, who is gay, wrote in an e-mail response that it was the way people talked and claimed that he was trying to provoke discussion by using the phrase.

Another running joke, involving the Slitheens suffering from bad flatulence (due to the gas exchange) while in their human disguises, was also slightly controversial in fan circles, with some critics disapproving of the style of humour. It did, however, give rise to one of the most quoted lines uttered by the Ninth Doctor during the season: "Would you mind not farting while I'm trying to save the world?"

The armoured personnel carrier seen outside Number 10 is a Saxon, possibly foreshadowing future events.

According to Russell T Davies in Doctor Who Magazine, as well as Doctor Who Confidential, the decision to establish the Bad Wolf meme in the series did not occur until after the spur-of-the-moment decision to have the words "bad wolf" graffiti-painted on the TARDIS; subsequently Bad Wolf references were added to the scripts for most of the other Series 1 episodes, and notwithstanding a few minor or inferred references in the interim, returned in force in the Series 4 episodes Turn Left and Journey's End. With the origin of the meme established, the mystery that remains is exactly why the words "bad wolf" were chosen to be spray-painted on the TARDIS in the first place (as opposed to any other phrase).

The address on Sneed's hearse indicates his mortuary is in Llandaff where the BBC Wales production offices are. Terry Nation, creator of the Daleks, was also born there.

According to Mark Gatiss on this story's commentary, there was originally going to be a scene in which the Doctor was mistaken for Sneed's new cleaner. Someone would have stated, "I thought you'd be a woman" to which the Doctor replies "No, not yet", hinting that Time Lords can change sex.

Dickens cries, "What the Shakespeare?", a play on the common exclamation, "What the Dickens?" Contrary to popular belief, the phrase has nothing to do with Charles Dickens; "Dickens" is a euphemism for the Devil. Riffing on this comment, in the 2006 Big Finish Productions audio drama The Kingmaker, William Shakespeare cries, "What the Geoffrey Chaucer?". Shakespeare used the phrase "What the Dickens" in The Merry Wives of Windsor, Act III, scene ii.

Mark Gatiss stated in the Radio Times that the original script was bleaker and more frightening, but he was advised by Davies to "make it more of a romp."

When Eve Myles was cast as Gwen Cooper in Torchwood, it was noted that the character she played in The Unquiet Dead had a similar name. Russell T Davies initially stated that there was no relationship between the two characters. In the fourth season finale episode, Journey's End, written by Davies, there is a short conversation between the Tenth Doctor and Rose Tyler, which suggests that Gwyneth's physical characteristics remained as an echo in the Time Rift and eventually imprinted themselves into Gwen. Russell T Davies has explained it as "It's not familial as we understand it. There's no blood tie. Spatial genetic multiplicity means an echo and repetition of physical traits across a Time Rift."

This marked a slight loosening of the Doctor's use of language in the revived series, although in light of the show's family-friendly tone the Doctor has never said anything stronger than "hell" and "damn."

Bad Wolf is mentioned for the first time, the Moxx of Balhoon stating, "Indubitably, this is the Bad Wolf scenario."

Russell T Davies, who created Cassandra, has said on many occasions that he was inspired to create Cassandra upon viewing skinny Hollywood actresses at the Academy Awards. On 2 April 2006, the Sunday Mirror quoted Davies: "It was horrific seeing those beautiful women reduced to sticks. Nicole Kidman struck me in particular. Nicole is one of the most beautiful women in the world. But she looks horrifying because she's so thin. It's like we're killing these women in public. We watch while you die."

Rose asks why all of the aliens seem to speak English, the first companion to do so since Sarah Jane Smith. Sarah Jane Smith asked the Doctor in The Masque of Mandragora while being possessed. It was this that alerted the Doctor to her possession. Rose is also the only one to question why he didn't ask permission first. Donna Noble also asked the Doctor and tried speaking Latin in The Fires of Pompeii.

The Doctor implies he was on the RMS Titanic, as was previously implied in Rose. In the classic series, there was a reference to the sinking in The Invasion of Time.

This was the first episode of the revival series and introduced Christopher Eccleston as the Ninth Doctor, and Billie Piper as his companion Rose Tyler. 

This episode was the Doctor Who debut for almost everyone who worked on it — except for model unit supervisor Mike Tucker, who worked as a visual effects assistant on the classic series from 1985 to 1989.

This is the first story featuring the new TARDIS console room, which has a far more organic appearance than its predecessors. Initially questioned by fans, the later mini-episode Time Crash would confirm this as a new "desktop theme" for the TARDIS interior called "coral".

This was the first Doctor Who episode to be produced in a widescreen picture format. Discounting the 1996 telefilm, it is also the first episode to have a shot-on-film appearance since 1985's Revelation of the Daleks and the first episode to be completely filmed since Spearhead from Space in 1970. However, the show is in fact videotaped, as it has been since 1986, with the footage subsequently processed to look like film. This production style continued into 2009 when the series began production in high definition.

The story itself could be a close sequel to Spearhead from Space, and has thematic similarities to the earlier story, as both feature a new Doctor, a new companion, and the Auton threat. The Autons had also appeared in Terror of the Autons, the story that introduced the Master, another new companion, and recurring UNIT character Mike Yates.

The reference to the Doctor having a Northern accent relates to the media attention generated around Christopher Eccleston - who had always retained his native Lancashire accent - not conforming to people's perception of what the Doctor should be like. It also references the fact the different actors who had previously played the Doctor had, themselves, differing accents, most notably Sylvester McCoy, whose Doctor spoke with a light Scottish accent.

A special effects milestone occurs when the Doctor is shown standing in the door of the TARDIS and the interior is clearly visible behind him. In the original series, the interior of the TARDIS was usually shown as a dark void whenever a head-on view of the open doors (a rarity) occurred. For the first time, elements of the exterior of the TARDIS -- specifically the inside of the doors and the POLICE BOX lettering along the roofline -- are visible from the console room.

Actor Nicholas Briggs makes his debut on the revived series, providing the voice of the Nestene Consciousness. He would go to be the show's designated voice actor, vocalising the Daleks and Cybermen over the next few seasons. Rose is far from Briggs' first Doctor Who-related work, as he had been an active participant in independent, unofficial, and licensed spin-off productions dating back to the 1980s, most notably hosting the Myth Makers interview video series, writing and directing films for BBV Productions and Reeltime Pictures, and as producer of the Big Finish Productions Doctor Who audio dramas, a project that had its roots in Audio Visuals, a series of fan-made Doctor Who audio adventures in which Briggs himself played the Doctor. In 2009, Briggs would have his first official on-screen appearance in a Who franchise production with a supporting role in Torchwood: Children of Earth.

Clive's website, Who is Doctor Who? marks the first time a character has directly referred to the Doctor by the name "Doctor Who" on screen since WOTAN in The War Machines. Clive's use is clearly meant in the form of a question, with "Doctor Who" being more or less a nickname.

As part of the launch of the new series, the BBC screened the documentary Doctor Who: A New Dimension on BBC One - coincidently narrated by David Tennant, the future Tenth Doctor.
