Classic Who - Season 5, Story 43 - The Wheel in Space

====================================
Quotes
====================================

The 2nd Doctor: The air's all right, the temperature's perfectly normal. There seems to be rather a lot of metal all around us...
Jamie: What? Oh, you know I can't hear you when you talk to yourself.

"The Tardis is trying to warn us to get away from here to somewhere more pleasant. I must have pushed the wrong switch." ~ The Second Doctor

The 2nd Doctor: I disengaged the time vector generator.
Jamie: The what?
The 2nd Doctor: Well once removed, it alters the size of the Tardis. The inside becomes an ordinary telephone box again.

Jamie: Well all right, stick your rod dimen...
The 2nd Doctor: Time vector generator.
Jamie: Aye, stick it back in, and we'll float off somewhere else.

[The Doctor gets two meal squares from the dispensing machine.]
Jamie: Am I supposed to eat this?
The 2nd Doctor: Yes, of course. It'll be delicious.
Jamie: I've heard of a square meal, but this is ridiculous.

"Now? Time is relative, Jamie. If I knew when 'now' was, I might be able to hazard a guess." ~ The Second Doctor

"Oh. We're all right for the time being. But listen, you. No more gallivanting about till I say so, all right? Doctor? Doctor?" ~ Jaime

Lernov: It isn't funny, Leo. The Controller's like a kid with a new toy.
Ryan: Oh, don't tell me you're going to be a old stick in the mud, too?
Lernov: If you are referring to Doctor Corwyn, she is known. She is no stick in the mud. She's perfectly right to be cautious.

Corwyn: You'll do. If it's any comfort to you, you are in fine physical shape. Can you give me your full name please?
Jamie: James Robert McCrimmon. Jamie.
Corwyn: Thank you. And your friend?
Jamie: Er, the Doctor.
Corwyn: I can't put that down.
Jamie: Er. John Smith.
Corwyn: Really?
Jamie: Aye.

Jamie: What are you laughing at?
Zoe: Your clothes. You're wearing female garments.
Jamie: Female? Look, I'll have you know this is a kilt. Have you not seen it before?
Zoe: Kilt? Kilt. A barbaric form of garment as worn by a kiltie! Are you of Scandinavian origin? Danish?
Jamie: No, I am not. I am a true bred Scot and I'll just thank you to...
Zoe: Oh, a Scot. Scotland, of course. Pre-century history isn't my field, you see.

Zoe: This Doctor friend of yours. Is he a scientist?
Jamie: He is in a way, I suppose, yes.
Zoe: What's his specialty?
Jamie: He's what?
Zoe: Well, is he a physicist, biochemist, astronomer, biometrician...
Jamie: Yes, he is.

"Well that's marvellous, isn't it? The Doctor told me to protect it. You don't give a reason, just leave me to get you out of trouble." ~ The Second Doctor

Ryan: No, it's all a problem in solid geometry to you, isn't it. Don't you care what happens here?
Zoe: Well, of course. I'm only telling you what's going to happen.
Ryan: Just like a robot. Fact, calculations.
Lernov: Leo!
Ryan: Proper little brainchild. All brain and no heart!

"Logic, my dear Zoe, merely enables one to be wrong with authority." ~ The Second Doctor

Flannigan: You can't come out.
Jamie: What was that scream?
Flannigan: I don't know. It sounded as if all the devils in hell was hounding someone, but you still can't come out.

"Simple common sense works wonders sometimes, Zoe." ~ The Second Doctor

Zoe: What's that?
The 2nd Doctor: It's a Cybermat!
Jamie: Aye.
The 2nd Doctor: The lights, Jamie, the lights. Cybermats.
Jamie: That means the Cybermen must be here too.

The 2nd Doctor: They were once men, human beings like yourself, from the planet Mondas, but now they're more robot then man.
Bennett: You mean half and half?
The 2nd Doctor: Oh no, more than that. Their entire bodies are mechanical and their brains have been treated neuro-surgically to remove all human emotions, all sense of pain. They're ruthless, inhuman killers!

"Are there any ordinary circumstances in space?" ~ The Second Doctor

The 2nd Doctor: Gemma! Gemma, did you know about this Bernalium from the rocket?
Corwyn: Yes, Tanya told me.
The 2nd Doctor: Don't you see what it means? The Cybermen are here. They came over in that crate.

"Now, now listen, listen everyone. The Cybermen are here, in this Wheel. They took over this poor fellow to stop you sending for help or signalling to Earth. Now just a minute. Gemma, you must alert the whole Wheel and you'll need something stronger than drugs to stop your people from being taken over. It doesn't matter how crude it is. A metal plate and a transistor will do. Tape them to the back of the neck. It will absorb the Cyber control signals." ~ The Second Doctor

The 2nd Doctor: We're going hunting, Jamie.
Jamie: Are you sure you know who's going to be hunted.

The 2nd Doctor: What's the thing which we need to survive which the Cybermen don't?
Jamie: Food.
The 2nd Doctor: Always thinking of your stomach, aren't you. No. Air, Jamie, air.

The 2nd Doctor: So you see this isn't just an attack by an alien race on a space station. The Cybermen have another purpose.
Corwyn: What?
The 2nd Doctor: They have an over-riding ambition to invade the Earth, plunder its mineral wealth, and somehow they see a way of doing it through this Wheel.

Jamie: Zoe, look!
Zoe: The meteorites, they're heading straight for us!

The 2nd Doctor: Because there's something on board that rocket that we've got to have if we're going to beat the Cybermen.
RYAN: And that justified risking two lives?
The 2nd Doctor: Yes, to save many. But anyway, we're all going to get killed shortly unless you switch over to sectional air supply.
RYAN: What are you talking about?
The 2nd Doctor: The Cybermen are going to poison the air.

Cyber-Planner [OC]: Positive. The Doctor is known and recorded. An enemy. He must be lured outside the force field and destroyed.
Jamie: They're going to try and trap the Doctor. Come on, let's get back and warn him.

Cyberman: You know our ways. You must be destroyed.
The 2nd Doctor: Yes, well, I was afraid you'd get back to that.

Jamie: Oh, it looks like the Doctor's already made one of them pay.
The 2nd Doctor: Yes, but they're sending in reinforcements, probably through the Loading Bay. Have you got the rod? Thank you. I'm going to try and fix this into the laser gun circuit. With any luck, I should be able to boost the power enough to destroy the Cyberman spaceship. But you'll have to hold them off at the loading bay. I need time.

Trivia
====================================
"The Wheel in Space" is most notable for the introduction of the character Zoe Heriot, a young scientist from the late 21st century.  She would join The Doctor and Jaime, replacing Victoria Waterfield on the TARDIS crew.

Wendy Padbury applied for the role, and after several rounds of auditions and a screen test at Lime Grove, she was given the job.  Since leaving Doctor Who, she has appeared in "Doctor Who and the Daleks in Seven Keys to Doomsday", a 1974 stage play at the Adelphi Theatre London based on the television series, and made a cameo appearance in The Five Doctors.

"Wheel" is also notable for being the first use of the Doctor's "John Smith" alias.  Jaime concocts the name after seeing it as a brand name on a medical container.

The spacesuits worn by Jamie and Zoe, which were previously seen in The Tenth Planet, later turned up as costumes in "Star Wars: A New Hope" and "Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back", most notably as the suite worn by Bossk the Bounty Hunter.

The story that was originally planned for this spot in the production schedule was to have portrayed a Dalek/Cybermen confrontation. Although this was disallowed by Terry Nation, he did give an important concession in return. He allowed for future Dalek stories — something that was not seen as certain at the time. His precondition for this permission would remain in effect the rest of his life: he had to be given the first right of refusal to write the script on any proposed Dalek storyline.  It is notable that after his death in 1997, permission to use the Daleks had to be obtained from his estate before they could included into the revival series in 2005.

Meanwhile, Kit Pedler, whose involvement with the original idea for a Cyber/Dalek war is uncertain, brought an entirely different Cybermen story to the table in the form of The Space Wheel. He was teamed with David Whitaker to bring this idea to script form. The idea of a Cyber/Dalek war festered in the minds of both Doctor Who fans and production staff alike. It would not be realised on-screen until the 2006 episode Doomsday.

"The Wheel in Space" is the first to have an incidental music score as well as sound effects provided by the BBC's Radiophonic Workshop. Incidental music in previous stories was taken from the BBC library, not created specifically for the story.

Patrick Troughton makes no appearance in Episode 2 of "The Wheel in Space" as he was on holiday during the week when it was recorded. The Doctor is seen only as an unconscious figure, with Chris Jeffries doubling for Troughton. Similarly, Anne Ridler was not hired for episode 6 so the dead Gemma Corwyn is represented by a double and photographs of Ridler are used for close-ups of Corwyn's body.

Only Episodes 3 and 6 exist in the BBC Archives. Episode 6 was transmitted from a 35 mm film print and retained in the BBC Film Library (although Episode 5 was not). A private collector obtained a copy of Episode 3 and returned it in 1983.

Episodes 1, 2, 4, and 5 are recreations by Graham Strong & Richard Develyn which lack subtitles, again making the actions sequences difficult to follow. These episodes are best watched while referencing the transcript where stage directions can clarify the non-speaking sequences.
