Classic Who - Season 26, Story 152 - Battlefield

Quotes
====================================
"No, my blood and thunder days are long past." ~ Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart

"A cry for help. Perhaps a summoning. Rippling out through the cosmos, forward in time, backwards in time and sideways in time...across the boundaries that divide one universe from another." ~ The Seventh Doctor

Ace: Who's Elizabeth Shaw? I don't even look like her.
The 7th Doctor: Oh, never mind. Just think like a physicist.

"I'd just like to say three things. Yeti, Autons, Daleks. Cybermen and Silurians! She didn't even notice. Among all the varied wonders of the universe there's nothing so firmly clamped shut as the military mind." ~ The Seventh Doctor

"Merlin. Against all hope. Oh, he has many faces, but in my reckoning, he is Merlin. No, not your aspect, but your manner that betrays you. Do you not ride the ship of time? Does it not deceive the senses being larger within than out? Merlin, cease these games and tell me truly, is this the time?" ~ Ancelyn

"Well, if my hunch is right, the Earth could be at the centre of a war that doesn't even belong to this dimension." ~ The Seventh Doctor

Mordred: Merlin! You were bound. My mother sealed you into the ice caves for all eternity.
The 7th Doctor: I am the master of time. I cannot be bound so easily.

"Yes, remember Baden and my mighty arts. Do you think I would use mere trickery against someone as formidable as you? Go, before I unleash a terrible something on you." ~ The Seventh Doctor

"I am Ancelyn ap Gwalchmai, Knight General of the Britons. I do not talk to peasants." ~ Ancelyn

Ace: What's this?
Warmsly: Ah, now that's a bit of a mystery. No one's been able to decipher the carving.
The 7th Doctor: It says, Dig Hole Here.
Warmsly: Extraordinary. What does it say that in?
The 7th Doctor: My handwriting. Ace, we need a hole.

The 7th Doctor: Peter, Ace and I are going to investigate this tunnel. You stay here and guard it. Don't let anyone come in here.
Warmsly: What am I supposed to do, lecture them on archeology?
The 7th Doctor: Yes.

Morgaine: I am Morgaine, the sun killer. Dominator of the thirteen worlds and Battle Queen of the S'Rax. What say you?
Brigadier: I am Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart. Surrender now, and we can avoid bloodshed.

Ace: Are you Merlin?
The 7th Doctor: No. But I could be, in the future. That is, my personal future. Which could be the past.
Ace: Right.

"Seen one spaceship you've seen them all." ~ Ace

Bambera: What are you doing in the lake?
Ace: Drowning.

The 7th Doctor: We might run into trouble.
Brigadier: Oh really, Doctor? You do surprise me.

"Armour piercing, solid core, with a Teflon coating. Go through a Dalek. UNIT's been very busy, Doctor. We've also got high-explosive rounds for Yeti's and very efficient armour-piercing rounds for robots. And we've even got gold-tipped bullets for you know what." ~ Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart

"Stop! I command it! There will be no battle here!" ~ The Seventh Doctor

"This is no battle. Tis but a ruse, a diversion. My mother hath summoned the Destroyer, the Lord of Darkness, Eater of Worlds. Look to your children, Merlin, for soon they shall be no more." ~ Mordred

"We know you of old, Merlin. You will not kill." ~ Mordred

"Just between you and me, Mordred, I'm getting a little tired of hearing about your mother." ~ Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart

"Now, high drama is very similar to comedy. It's all a matter of... Timing." ~ The Seventh Doctor

"Do me a favour. Geronimo!" ~ Ace

"Who said anything about playing chess? I'm playing poker. And I have an Ace up my sleeve." ~ The Seventh Doctor

Ace: Dear Doctor. King died in final battle. Everything else propaganda.
The 7th Doctor: Who signed it?
Ace: The Doctor.
The 7th Doctor: Ah well, that sorts that out.
Ace: PS, Morgaine has just seized control of the nuclear missile.
The 7th Doctor: Tut. I could have given myself more warning.

"Death falling from the sky, blind, random, anywhere, anytime. No one is safe, no one is innocent? Machines of death, Morgaine, are screaming from above, of light brighter than the sun. Not a war between armies nor a war between nations, but just death, death gone mad. The child looks up in the sky, his eyes turn to cinders. No more tears, only ashes. Is this honour? Is this war? Are these the weapons you would use? Tell me!" ~ The Seventh Doctor

Trivia
====================================
"Battlefield" has the dubious distinction of being the lowest rated story produced during the original 26 year run of Doctor Who.  Episode one drew a paultry 3.1 million viewers, a bit of a shame as Ben Aaronovitch did a splendid job on the script.

This story marks the last regular season appearance of Nicholas Courtney as Alastair Lethbridge-Stewart.  He would appear for the charity episode, "Dimensions in Time" in 1993, and then again in 2008 the spin-off series "The Sarah Jane Adventures".

After the remembrance ceremony in Part 2, Morgaine (played by Jean Marsh) says that she will kill the Brigadier next time they meet. 2000 years later, during The Daleks' Master Plan, Sara Kingdom, played by Marsh, kills Bret Vyon, played by Courtney.

This is the last appearance of UNIT in the show's original run.

Working titles for "Battlefiend" included Nightfall, Storm Over Avallion, Lake Over Avallion, Pool of Avallion, Song of Avallion, Stormtroopers of Avallion, and The Battlefield.

The knights were to have worn futuristic equipment which looked like armour only superficially; unfortunately, it was felt that this would be too costly to realise.

This story takes place 'a few years in the future' from Ace's starting point. This is made evident when Ace is surprised that the combined costs of a glass of water and a glass of lemonade are five pounds and when the Brigadier gets a phone call from Geneva and mentions that England now has a king (he cannot be referring to the king of Switzerland because the Swiss don't have a monarchy).

During filming of a sequence at the end of episode 2, the beginning of episode 3 where Ace is trapped in a water tank, actress Sophie Aldred suffered minor cuts when the glass front to the tank cracked.

Further problems were caused as water flooded the studio floor. Sylvester McCoy noticed in time to alert the crew; Sophie Aldred was pulled out and the studio was hurriedly evacuated. It is commonly believed by cast and crew that Aldred might have died if McCoy hadn't noticed the leak. Assistant Floor Manager Gary Downie has said she was in no danger and it was only the floor crew at risk, although other cast/crew believed differently. Years later, McCoy would remember that day as the one time he himself was the hero instead of the Seventh Doctor.
