Classic Who - Season 20, Story 128 - The King's Demons

Quotes
====================================
"Damn you cringing caitiffs. We tell you there's naught to fear. Do our demons come to visit us? Bid them attend us." ~ King John

"Demons? Very odd indeed. He even seems pleased to see us.  A king welcoming demons?" ~ The Fifth Doctor

Tegan: The one who lost something in the Wash?
The 5th Doctor: Well, you could put it like that. This particular shirt turned out to be the Crown Jewels, but that's next year. We're still three months away from Magna Carta.

Tegan Jovanka: Look at the size of that bed.
The 5th Doctor: Hm. Another way of keeping warm.

Tegan Jovanka: How can they live in such cold?
The 5th Doctor: Eating lots of food.

"We are not demons and we've done no harm to the King, or to anyone. Nor do we intend any." ~ The Fifth Doctor

Hugh: Can you not call on Hell?
Turlough: I could, but then so could you, with a better chance of success, I fancy.

"Oh, indeed no, sire, but surely such a fate is too mild. Would not boiling in oil be a more fitting end?" ~ The Fifth Doctor

Ranulf: He is said to be the best swordsman in France.
The 5th Doctor: Well, fortunately, we are in England.

"I fear no hellhound." ~ Sir Gilles

"This is useless in your hands. You have moral scruples." ~ The Master

"Hold! We give you the choice, our demon. The Maiden shall embrace this snivelling wretch, or Sir Geoffrey. Choose, our demon. Come, the lady waits, impatient to lavish her warm favours. Come, our demon." ~ King John

"I am the sworn enemy of that demon who calls himself the Doctor, who has come to defame the King and bring ill-repute to him." ~ The Master

"Don't listen to him, please. He is the evil one." ~ Turlough

The 5th Doctor: In the interest of security, where is the Master most likely to house his Tardis?
Tegan: In a dungeon.
The 5th Doctor: Quite so.

"The Master has set up an imposter as King John of England. He wants to rob the world of Magna Carta. Small time villainy by his standards, but nevertheless something I intend to stop if at all possible." ~ The Fifth Doctor

Tegan: No, I believe he may be in the Tardis. Blue engine.
Ranulf: Open it.
Tegan: No, I must open it. Other demons may try to harm you.

"Allow me to introduce Kamelion. Kamelion is a tool of an earlier invader of Xeriphas, and instrumental in my escape from that benighted planet." ~ The Master

"The King turns the Barons solidly against him, he is killed in battle or deposed, possibly in favour of King Phillip of France. He cannot therefore offer Magna Carta. What do you think of it so far?" ~ The Fifth Doctor

"You will know that the King and his dead brothers are believed to be the devil's work. Your interference here with your dreary Tardis has only confirmed this. You are, dare I say so, discredited demons, and as such you make a unique contribution to altering the course of history. Hoist on your own petard." ~ The Master

"With Kamelion's unique ability at my command, it's only a matter of time before I undermine the key civilisations of the universe. Chaos will reign, and I shall be its emperor." ~ The Master

"He's a machine, Doctor, just a machine. How can we be certain he still isn't under the control of the Master?" ~ Tegan

Tegan: I don't want to go home.
The 5th Doctor: Of course you do. You don't have to pretend. It's a shame, of course. There were many wonders I wanted to show you.
Tegan: You still can.

Trivia
====================================
Arranged by John Waller, the sword fight between the Doctor and the Master used no stunt performers — Peter Davison and Anthony Ainley did it all. The Fifth Doctor became the third consecutive incarnation of the Doctor to have some skill with a blade. Indeed, Demons provided a kind of rematch for the Doctor and the Master, echoing the earlier duel between the Third Doctor and the Delgado Master. It was the last televised story to feature the Doctor-as-swordsman until David Tennant's debut.

This story marks the debut appearance of short-lived new 'companion' Kamelion – in reality a computer controlled, sound activated, animated robot created by software designer Mike Power and computer hardware expert Chris Padmore of a firm called CP Cybernetics. The prop did not work well however, and despite being added to the TARDIS' crew at the end of Part 2, Kamelion subsequently disappears from the series until his final appearance in Planet of Fire.

The story (and, thus, the season) ends in a minor cliffhanger, although it is unlikely initial viewers will have thought of it as such. Much like the link between Invasion of the Dinosaurs and Death to the Daleks, the Doctor here offers to take his companions to a "wonder" of the universe, later referenced in the following story. Unlike the similar promise the Third Doctor makes to take Sarah Jane to Florana however, the Fifth Doctor's vow to Tegan and Turlough is actually fulfilled. He proposes to take them to the Eye of Orion, the initial setting for The Five Doctors.

The Doctor is knighted here, albeit not by the genuine King John. He would later be knighted by the actual Queen Victoria in Tooth and Claw.
